Re: any one done a MOOC?

Its pretty much what it says "massive open online course".

A course - often run by a university - which is generally free of charge every week you get a video lecture and perhaps a few chapters to read and you are then expected to write an essay of a couple of hundred words (some course you get multiple choice questions either along side or in place of the essay) your essay is peer reviewed - which means that every week you get maybe three essays to read and mark.

At the end hopefully you know more about the subject have enjoyed the experience and if you can be bothered printing it out a certificate from the sponsoring university that you can impress your friends with!

there are quite literally hundreds of courses available Ive just checked the website of one provider of MOOCs and they show 73 pages with three or four courses per page.

here are some starting soon,

History of Rock, Part One
This course, part 1 of a 2-course sequence, examines the history of rock, primarily as it unfolded in the United States, from the days before rock (pre-1955) to the end of the 1960s. This course covers the music of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and many more artists, with an emphasis both on cultural context and on the music itself. We will also explore how developments in the music business and in technology helped shape the ways in which styles developed

Functional Programming Principles in Scala

Functional programming is becoming increasingly widespread in industry. This trend is driven by the adoption of Scala as the main programming language for many applications. Scala fuses functional and object-oriented programming in a practical package. It interoperates seamlessly with both Java and Javascript. Scala is the implementation language of many important frameworks, including Apache Spark, Kafka, and Akka. It provides the core infrastructure for sites such as Twitter, Tumblr and also Coursera.

Contemporary Issues in Ocean Governance
Learn about how the world’s oceans are regulated, protected and preserved. This course considers the nature of how the world’s oceans are regulated. It will go through how ocean governance has evolved through time and how it actually works. In addition, there will be a focus on particular issues such as piracy, maritime security and environmental protection for the oceans.

Innovation Management
What is innovation management? How do firms bring in new business models and get new products and services to the market? Go on a nine-week journey through innovation management concepts, theories of idea generation, selection, strategy formulation and implementation in this MOOC in Innovation Management. In it, you will also learn the tools for implementing innovation projects yourself

and the list goes on .....and on.....and on......

I am currently enrolled in my first course. A History of thr French Revolution. Taught by Peter McPhee of the University of Melbourne. Thus far I enjoy it. It is a relaxing way to spend a few hours a week, while expanding what limited knowledge I have of the topic that I picked up back in my Prep School days over 50 years ago. Absolutely amazing what one can forget in half a century.

In my neck of the woods it called "University online" which is easier to understand than "massive open online course". emoticon

At age 66, semi-retired, with three degrees from two of America's major universities, I know longer have any interest in, nor any need for formal academic qualification. At this point in my life I will forgo the online credit programs for what I am interested in. Not what I NEED to matriculate in.
