The death penalty?
The death Penalty?
First of all it doesn't work as an deterrent. Second it puts us in the same league as some of the most barbaric nations on earth. Third it is a march backwards in human history not a step into the future. Forth...just because we can do something doesn't mean we have to. Five...it is unethical, unfair, racial biased and deplorable. What do you think?

Re: The death penalty?
Rose, the only thing I would add to your post is that the death penalty makes no sense economically. It has been proven that it costs the state less for life imprisonment than it does to execute a prisoner, given the cost of countless appeals, etc... I live in a state - Iowa - that has no death penalty. Yet is homicide rates, violent crime rates, and overall crime rates are among the lowest in the country.

Re: The death penalty?
I think the death penalty is exactly what these monsters deserve when there is no doubt the person awaiting execution has committed a horrendous crime against another human.
In the US we are allowing the murderers to have a better lifestyle and more rights than the general population.

well there is certainly no doubt that they were convicted of committing a horrendous crime against another human
whether or not they actually did it is a whole other (large irrelevant )issue!

Convicted???... yes they have been. No doubt about it in my mind is having actual proof they committed a crime. Without actual proof i might think differently.
I'm so sick of these creeps getting out of paying their dues because of some legal (using the term loosely) technicality.
Years ago i read about a little girl , three years old...the !@#$ monster raped and tortured her then skinned her alive... He had recorded and video taped everything he did to this little innocent baby. Nothing could be done to him, because of the legal technicality of the police not having a search warrant for his premise.
Situations like this just make me sick.

Re: The death penalty?
As Rose says, it is barbaric and it does not act as a deterrent.
Ms Dulittle, just because a murderer is utterly contemptible is no reason for the state to act the same way.

I consider not getting a search warrant by the cops a huge legal technicality and a total blow it, if I lived in that district, I'd come unglued at the cops for making such a gross error.
I used to want these types of crimes for them to be put to death as well but if you read the mental state of long term prisoners, the suffering might just top dying. If you read the list of countries that have the death penalty most are third world we are not a third world country and it is time to get rid of it, especially for a country who takes on the role as number one for human rights, that is hypocritical.

I agree.
It also works as a very effective deterrent for murderers who are executed. In some cases where executions haven't occurred as originally planned the murderer has gone on to kill other people.
Governments have the same right to utilize capital punishment as they have to employ armed police officers and soldiers. It's a way to prevent harm to innocent citizens.

Re: The death penalty?
Is the death penalty "cruel and unusual"? I guess "cruel" is subject to debate. But given the manner in which executions are cared out, it is most definately unusual.
