for the record not all lambs are slaughter some have long careers in the textiles industry

Not so long!
the first shearing is the only one of any value ("virgin wool") after that its quality goes down year on year.

As I have said previously most farmers here dont even bother shearing their sheep - a fleece sells for less than 50c its costs more than that to have it sheared!

few lambs make it passed 12 months of age (most are slaughtered at 3 months)- only a few are retained to replace aging ewes the rest get sent off to be turned into chops.

Ms Doolittle the deaths of these lambs might one day lead to treatment that would have saved your child, had it been available at the time would you have refused it on the basis that animals died in its development?

Thank you Katie and Snowpixie...that was 47 years ago,,,

I was young and dumb(er) back then. The thing that bothers me the most, was we weren't even given the fetus to bury. I didn't really know anything about going to a good attorney back then. I always picture a 4 1/2 month little boy in a jar somewhere. The instance was rather rare at that time and i can remember coming to as some doctor explained to a room full of young interns what was happening ....cameras were running and pictures taken without my consent.

To top it off they put me on the maternity ward and some nurse came in to let me know it was about time for my baby to be brought in to me....a freakin' nightmare that will never be erased from my mind without a frontal lobotomy done first.

(Snowpixie) so sorry about your daughter. Were they able to repair this after birth?

I think animals are entitled to a life in peace just as humans are.

My situtation probably wouldn't be helped even now. The fetus/baby died at 4 1/2 months....the doctor said he could hear a heartbeat at a 6 months check up, at 6 1/2 months i started loosing blood and went to the hospital....was told afterwards my baby had died in utero at 4 1/2 months. I carried a dead baby for two months.

A lamb is not a human, a rat, cat, dog, etc are not humans. I don't believe an accurate testing result will ever be seen unless performed on a human.....the one that's being supposedly tested for.

thank you, she's my granddaughter not my daughter. There was nothing they could do.
her hand portion fused so she just has a stub for a arm. That said, she's a happy little girl and her smile lights up a room. She played captain hook recently in her school play. She's a little shy around strangers because of her arm and tries to hid it, but around family and her friends she's one happy kid and the best thing that's happened to our family.

Snowpixie...your granddaughter sounds like a sweet/precious little girl who is loved lots. Glad she has your family.

imho we're all born with imperfections, whether they are visibly noticeable or not.

the early stages of testing for almost everything is done on animals, if you can transplant a kidney in a dog then doing it on a person isnt a big step, if a drug has its desired effect on a mouse and a rat and a cat and a monkey if is likely that it will also have the desired effect on a human - the regimen isnt without its faults but testing on animals is always a good first step.

the day will come - probably soon - that all drug tests will be done on human tissue cultures but using animals for surgical techniques will always be a feature - no one is going to voluteer to have their organs pulled out and a synthetic replacement inserted

Just because testing on animals has been done, doesn't make it right. I hope that testing on animals will become obsolete in my lifetime. The number of animal rights activists is rising daily.

As i've stated many times. If you want to get results on how a procedure will affect a human...then use a human.

there would be few if any useable voluteers and even if there were sufficient there are ethical problems.

Do we call a halt to all new transplants? stop doing new bone grafts and joint replacements, cease work on artificial organs?

They've been doing transplants for years on humans, why do they need to keep testing/ torturing animals...other than for money and to make use of both their Jeckle and Hyde sides.

Use humans for testing, not animals. There are people tested on all of the time with drugs...for money. I believe you would have many volunteers if the price was right. It would be their choice and not mandatory. Many people have no limit to what they will do for money.

because they need to improve what they are doing they need to develop new techniques and new transplants.

Transplants started with kidneys, then Liver, heart pancreas lung and intestinal tract.

Now they can transplant corneas, hands, bones wombs and even faces

every new proceedure needs development

I dont believe that any surgical proceedures are trialed on humans - can you imagine anyone on being approached by a doctor saying "I want to take out your heart and replace it with someone elses - Ive never tried it before but I think it might work OK" agreeing to it - how ever much they were offered??

drug trials are one thing transplant surgery is some thing quite different

Many people have no limit to what they will do for money.

I think that most would draw the line at being killed having their organs removed and then a doctor trying to replace the organs and bring them back to life - particularly if the doctor hadnt previously practiced on animals
