Europe can no longer "completely depend" on the US

Europe can no longer "completely depend" on the US and UK following the election of President Trump and Brexit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel says.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-40078183

Mrs Merkel said she wanted friendly relations with both countries as well as Russia but Europe now had to "fight for its own destiny".
It follows the G7's failure to commit to the 2015 Paris climate deal, talks Mrs Merkel said were "very difficult".
President Trump has said he will make a decision in the coming week.
"The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I've experienced that in the last few days," Mrs Merkel told a crowd at an election rally in Munich, southern Germany.
This makes me sad. But she's absolutely right with her assessment and that makes her the head of the free world. not Trump.

I guess someone should memo Trump that he's no longer viewed as a world leader, but what can one expect when the US puts someone like Trump into office. What a disaster. At least Merkel is competent and i wish her success in her new role as leader of the free world.

So what is your opinion?

How can anyone expect a man like Trump to do the right thing. The "right thing" for him is stealing pennies from children. Merkel deserves to be the leader of the free world and I too wish her well.

Why does the EU have to 'Depend on the US'? Why is that a right thing to do?

Because that what allies do.

Here’s what’s really true: Donald Trump is doing damage to the deepest and most broadly agreed foreign-policy interests of the United States. He is doing so while people associated with his campaign are under suspicion of colluding with Vladimir Putin’s spy agencies to bring him to office. The situation is both ugly and dangerous. If it’s to be corrected, all Americans—eminent Republicans like Bob Corker above all—must at least correctly name it for what it is. - David Frum

Trump is definitely failing to impress the rest of the world.

Donald Trump acted like 'a drunk tourist' on Europe trip that led Angela Merkel to proclaim end of US alliance
President took harsher stance against European allies than against leaders of Middle East in Riyadh

And then there's this

President Trump Turned International Diplomacy Into A Fistfight—And Lost
President Trump’s performance in the last leg of his first international trip has European leaders fuming—and American diplomats likening him to a ‘drunk tourist.’

Europeans don't instantly buy nonsense about Russia being an enemy but most Americans and Brits do.

I hear the speculative, unfounded with evidence same crap the media is spewing, EU does not NEED to depend on the US, they are their own nations with their own militaries and their own economic engines. If they depend on the US this just stokes the evidence of the dumping of materials and machines on the US to keep their markets blossoming. They need to stand on their own accord not off the dependency to another nation.

Being lectured by Trump on how much they need to spend (waste?) on armaments was a great help.
