Annual Red Green Regatta, named for the eponymous host of The Red Green Show, refused to let the weather dampen their spirits. According to KUAC, the UAF-affiliated public broadcasting station that hosted the event, the regatta allows participants to construct vessels out of “whatever floats their boat”, so long as the crafts construction includes at least one roll of duct tape – the “Handyman’s Secret Weapon.”

I was looking for images from the Red Green movie that includes a flying duct tape duck that held about half a dozen people, but found no images yet.

Here is a review:

I don't know if anyone has actually "built" a plane from duct tape but it's regularly used to repair aircraft. Strictly speaking it's called "Speed Tape" and is regularly used to patch holes in airplane hulls.

The first time I ever heard of the stuff my wife and I were flying home for the holidays and had already checked in and were waiting in the departure lounge when they announced that there was a "problem" with our aircraft. Seems one of the baggage handlers had been using a forklift and managed to punch a hole in the hull of the plane and the ground crew was examining it to see what could be done.

One of other passengers called a friend in the engineering department of the aircraft manufacturer and he was told that's the way they'd patch the hole. The only question was whether or not the hole was a "tear" or just a "puncture". If it was a puncture we'd be good to go but a tear was a different matter - seems that the air pressure resulting from flying at high speed could cause a tear to spread in which case we'd be in deep doo doo.

The real delay was that the local ground crew/mechanical staff wasn't allowed to make that determination. They had to email pictures of the damage to the manufacturer's head office so their engineers could make the call. Fortunately it was just a puncture and we took off (only about an hour late)

Just googled this. Seems that Mythbusters did build a plane out of duct tape - an ultralight

You can fix anything with a coat hanger, some duct tape, and enough beer.
