Europe-wide police operation busts horsemeat racket.

Horsemeat unfit for human consumption was exported using forged documents, Spanish police found.

[Apparently the selling of horsemeat is problematic all around the world. Canada sells millions of pounds of horsemeat around the world but as far as I know its not for sale anywhere in this country. I know there are herds of wild horses in Western Canada and every once in a while a governmental cull sees that they don't become over populated. I read that usually they are butchered and sold to makers of cat and dog food. An ignoble end for such a beautiful animal. The horsemeat is mostly consumed in Europe and Asia and what I wonder is where all the horses come from? Are they raised in herds for slaughter like Cattle? Why is it such a shady business around the world? I read its healthier to eat than beef. The only place I have seen it for sale was in France. I'm not sure if I could eat it if it was sold at my local supermarket. What about you?]

It's been a very long time but when I lived in Vancouver there were a couple of butchers that sold horsemeat. I was eating steak for less than my roomies were paying for the cheapest hamburger.

And there are plenty of places in Canada that sell it - a few minutes on Google should provide you with at least a few.

If you're in a major city you shouldn't have too much trouble finding someplace near you.

To be honest, if I gave you a horsemeat steah I'd spiced it differently but otherwise you wouldn't notice the difference.

The only comment I'd make about horsemeat hamburger is that it was too lean so I'd buy about five pounds of that and mix in a pound of the cheapest fattiest ground beef I could find. Freeze it in whatever size packages I wanted and I was good to go.

Had horsemeat in the military and there is no way they will convince me otherwise as I used to buy it for my Grandmother's dog as food. Horse is leaner, a little on the stringy tissue side but also without the sinew tendons that larger cattle end up with that are hard to cut and harder to chew.

I rarely eat red meat of any type. Opting instead for fish and seafood as well as some poultry - primarily duck, turkey, and goose. My penchant for seafood goes back to my days growing upon the Adriatic, when my mother would make daily trips down to the docks and buy fresh seafood off the boats. This is a rather verbose way of saying I have never dined on horse.. And have not the remotest interest in doing so.

a couple of years ago when this first struck (UK) it was mainly ready made processed food which was found to contain various amounts of horse (to to 100% of the 'beef')

there is nothing wrong with horse meat its mainly a labeling infringement - if the label says 'beef' it has to be beef - incidentally a few years back a major supermarket chain was caught out selling the sort of 'beef' commonly seen in cowboy films (the cows with a hump) that doesnt count as 'beef' here either - its 'zebu' (bos indicus, beef has to come from bos taurus).

anothe big labeling problem is that many pizza places here are Muslim own and they dont use ham (as in cured pig meat) but use cured turkey meat and dont tell you

Bought horse meat as a student to save money.
What I was told is that there are too many horses, and those with undesirable genetic traits are simply culled, and there is no reason to let the meat go to waste.

I thought that the eating of horse meat was banned in the US by the 2006 'Horse Slaughter Prevention Act' - which incidentally Trump has marked down for repeal

It's not banned in the US it is banned in a few states. What was banned by the feds, is they won't provide the budget for inspection, so you can't sell from state to state or international. What Trump wants is to capture the wild mustangs on BLM land and turn them into dinner. emoticon

There are just too many for the range.
They have to be reduced.
I know people who then buy them, train them, and sell them for a profit as rescues.

Kyger Mustangs are very nice looking horses, and very nice personalities as well.

Horses are indigenous to North America but disappeared from here thousands of years ago. They still existed in Europe and were returned to the Americas by the Spanish conquistadors. They are an important part of our history and have been used by all sides in most of our wars and are symbols of our national history. They should not be food for us or dogs and cats.

Overall the general public in the US has not taken to eating horse meat, it is akin to eating your dog or cat.

If the "disappeared from here thousands of years ago" they ARE NOT "indigenous" by definition. Ergo, in the wild, they are an invasive species.

Horses were once indigenous, they became extinct and the Spanish brought them back and not as pets to ride. Native Americans used them for centuries, mustangers sold them throughout the US for a living, many were caught and trained as transportation for white men and as work horses. Now it is time to roam wild as they are no longer needed for transport or work and some want these lovely long hard working beasts on a plate. BLM owns 247 million acres, surely there is room somewhere......

When the alternative is to shoot them from helicopters or poisoning them, as we used to do, then using them for food is better.
