The board:

The last week has had the lowest participation in our boards history, here or on YUKU. It ran from a low of 22 posts/replies to a high as 50 and we seem to have lost a few members as well. Usually we have around 100 a day but not lately. Of course there could be a lot of reasons but whatever the cause [sign in to see URL] a troubling trend. I just thought you should all know.

It's also vacation season so I'm sure a lot of people are out of pocket until school's back in.

BTW - the other boards I follow are pretty slow right now.

Yuku boards have mostly been transferred to tapatalk and they are hardly breaking any attendance records as far as I can see.

Sadly any reason I offer for my own lack of activity is little more than an excuse. None the less I will confess to observing more than partipating. In addition to having this lifelong problem of being painfully slow in reading and writing in English, I now have to deal with how my relapsing MS is impacting my fine motor skills. And even with the occupational therapy sessions, my typing has become a real adventure. But I will try to increase my activity, as I owe it to you and the other members. And OT people say typing is good exercise for me.

I'll do my best out there. But right now the only other board I'm semi-active on is FSA. And I'm certain we really want anyone from over there. Actually can think of four five from each side of the aisle I would like to see over here. However we might just be a bit too mild for their taste.

Will be my last post for awhile here.

I come in and view then leave as geezes, john and shiftless having absolutely closed minds and made up minds that will not accept anyone else's viewpoint or even be considerate in asking the premise of other view points have treated so many so badly here that I just backed out awaiting what would happen. It evidently has where many are just backing off and out to give them back pat room for those long double jointed arms.

I will not post anywhere that I am personally attacked for a view I consider as OPEN where they cannot be open enough to consider alternative sides. They want a strictly 'Their View' board they can have it with good luck being interesting enough to draw responses.

BTW - I'm still waiting for an answer as to why you think sororities et al should go back to the old days with house mothers and so forth. You've never answered that.

And the only other place I can think of where we butted heads was over Trump's transgender ban in the military - you didn't like having your logic critiqued. But that's it.

I have tried everything I can think of to keep this board open to alternate views and opinions as I did on my first board the USA. I'm beginning to think its just not the American way to put up with a mix of views. There are plenty of right wing sites and some left wing sites but very few boards where there is a respect for differing views where firm but polite opinions can be discussed. I guess this is the wrong age for such a place.

A small mostly liberal board that I post on, liberal, not progressive, got moved to Tapatalk, and that place sucks. I know that it will not be maintained. I have a place where it could be moved, or in the alternative possibly join here. Although YAP takes up a great deal of my Forum time, I have no idea what will happen with my old group. We've posted together for twenty years or so. Rigby knows some of them, so he may or may not be comfortable with them, and since he's pretty happy here, I wouldn't try to bring them in.

I think this board does a pretty good job of allowing opposing points of view.

I can easily name boards that are extreme in either direction.

On the contrary, I think Time Zone people would be a great fit here.

First of all, what is good for dozens of people is far more important than what I may like or dislike.

Second is that I never disliked anyone. That has nothing to do with it. It is just that when a moderator, like Diane48 or MizRobbie, totally refuse to understand what you are trying to explain, and instead use their position to try to influence how the whole board perceives your viewpoints, then it is time to leave. I don't mind discussing with either or any. It is only as moderator I can't deal with them. They broke the rules.
As posters it would not matter.

There can be civil, and very interesting, differences of opinion among people of the same political persuasion, or even among people of different political persuasions when they all believe in equality under the law and equality of opportunity for people of all races and religions and genders and sexual orientations.

But when you get a poster who says Muslims have to be wiped out or expelled, or denied their civil rights, because they want to impose sharia on us. Or one who says African-Americans are angry and hate white people. Or one who says poor people are poor because they won’t work, and rich people shouldn’t be taxed for their success. Or one who says women are genetically unfit to be lawmakers or engineers. Or one who says if you can’t win at the ballot box, you should resort to bullets -- so many ideas that have appeared on boards I have been on. It’s then that you have to decide, Do I let that pass, or do I object? If I object, how strong should my objection be? Do I try to reason about something that is not susceptible to reason, or do I call these ideas by their names? How much tolerance of intolerance am I prepared to ignore?

It’s easier to ignore these things if they are in a thread where you haven’t joined the discussion. But it’s very hard to ignore them if you started the thread or if the offensive post is in answer to something you’ve just said. Sometimes the idea is so egregious or unreasonable that you can’t ignore it and keep your self-respect no matter where it’s posted. If you can’t speak then, you have to leave the board, and sometimes leaving is a very great loss.

As noted a apology becomes a slam, there is no consideration for any view point but the immediate and as such can have to meaning save to be placed underfoot. This is why it is not worth or worthy to give an alternate view, an alternate ideal or an difference of opinion as it becomes a target to play with and ridicule from. No thanks.

I can see what you mean.
But although we all have our areas of intense beliefs, there also are always areas of mutual interest.
Instead of always focusing on intransigent areas, there are always other areas that may work out better, such as food, hobbies, human relations, vacations, natural wonders, speculations on the future, great deeds of the past, etc.

When someone seems stubborn or short sighted, it is best to assume they mean well, but just think their data is correct. When in reality , no one can be really sure of our data.

Great post.

I can share those frustrations.
In fact I can understand how I am wrong when I sometimes consider the bullet over the ballot box out of frustration, because the reality of innocents harmed when things come down to violence.

What I have decided is that when something totally unacceptable comes up, you don't ignore it, but after you have given it your best shot, then more would just likely waste everyone's time and make people even less open to change.

The rules are simple, hopefully easy to follow and important to keep the board civil. If I may remind you all. #4 is the rule that I consider most important. If Katie or I miss something you can always let us know by private message. Give us time to get things right and to discuss it carefully on the management board. We will do our best to fix the problem. That is OUR job.

The rules:

Be nice.

Don't start fights

Don't get caught up in a fight.

Let me and my administer handle anyone who is out of line.

Enjoy yourself and have lots of fun.

Try and post an opening post a few times a week. It keeps people interested.

Good point.
Whether one is right or not, a long heated exchange between 2 people just ruins things for others who have other interests that get shut out.
