Lost WW2 warship USS Indianapolis found after 72 years:

Lost WW2 warship USS Indianapolis found after 72 years:

The warship's sinking, weeks before WW2's end, remains the worst US naval loss in history.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40991326

[The USS Indianapolis had a sad history. It really was a ship of death bringing nuclear fuel for the Atomic bomb that killed over a hundred thousand people in Hiroshima and then on its way back home being sunk and the survivors in the water going through an unimaginable horror. Now the ship has been found and will become a war memorial. If anything it should be declared an "anti-war memorial" to truly respect all who died because of her.]

My brother's ex-father in law was a Marine Guard aboard the Indy, he was one of those that survived but would absolutely not speak of the incident. He passed away some four years ago now. He had been head football coach at UMR Univ. MO., Rolla in the 70's/80's Dewey Allgood.

Rose, in my estimation ANY war memorial should be declared an anti-war memorial.

After dozens of cemeteries, memorials and battlefields I've been to, instead of honouring the dead with these, how about we don't send them!

That is taking it to the extreme. Unfortunately I do understand and I don't see it forthcoming that there is a time a country does need to defend itself. The problem I have with that is many involvements the US has been in was not because anyone was taking pot shots at the US but in our own economic or political interests, not theirs. Maybe my statement was as a mother or who I am as a person but crisscrossing The Netherlands, Belgium and France and seeing well over a million graves of all those young persons no matter what side they are on I found heartbreaking.

We have been in that 'We do not need to have such military' positions just prior to the Spanish American War, the First World War and the Second World War. so you make no real point.

The point is war is a political decision and not always a necessary decision.

The US was a holdout as to entering WWI, it took the sinking of the Lusitania to bring us into mobilization and mechanization.

Ships as the Arizona and the Oklahoma or the Utah were products of that war becoming the only real warships we had at the FORCED entry of WWII by their sinking. Japan and Germany had embarked on military mechanization expansion, the US had not until WE were attacked from both those nations.

We sit with few new machines today, a reducing number of military personnel, machines developed in the 1970's and 80's as to design and yet the call to demilitarize continues. We see elements as Putin or China's Premier or even the little fat bastard of NK as threatening the aging giant they consider becoming toothless. We now walk right back down that same path followed so many times prior where we had of recent history maintained our strength during those Cold War era days and the hounds had remained at distance.
