Congress passes resolution telling Trump to denounce Neo-Nazis

Congress Passes Measure Challenging Trump to Denounce Hate Groups

By GLENN THRUSHSEPT. 12, 2017

WASHINGTON — The House and Senate have unanimously passed a joint resolution urging President Trump to denounce racist and anti-Semitic hate groups, sending a blunt message of dissatisfaction with the president’s initial, equivocal response to the white nationalist violence in Charlottesville, Va., last month.

The resolution passed the Senate without dissent on Monday and was approved without objection by the entire House on Tuesday night. It could be sent to the White House for Mr. Trump’s signature as early as Wednesday.

A White House spokeswoman did not immediately answer a request for comment.
The nonbinding measure specifically singles out for condemnation “White nationalists, White supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, and other hate groups.” That represents a sharp contrast to the president’s first comments after the deadly early August demonstrations in which he assigned equivalent blame for the violence on anti-fascist counter-protesters.

Mr. Trump denounced “hatred, bigotry and violence — on many sides” and argued that many of the protesters who staged a torchlight march to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee from the University of Virginia campus were “very fine people.”

The House version of the resolution, introduced by Republican and Democratic House members from Virginia, asks Mr. Trump to “use all resources available to the President and the President’s Cabinet to address the growing prevalence of those hate groups in the United States.”

In a rare show of bipartisan unity, Speaker Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin and Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, introduced the measure as a joint resolution, which requires a presidential signature. Two Republican congressional aides involved in the process said the intent was to put the president on the record calling out white racism by name.

The text doesn’t include any reference to counterprotesters.

It also calls on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to “investigate thoroughly all acts of violence, intimidation, and domestic terrorism by White supremacists, White nationalists, neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, and associated groups” and to “improve the reporting of hate crimes” to the F.B.I.

How can they pass a Resolution to force someone even the President, to make such a statement? That sounds or reads as fake news and if they did do this they all need to return home to their constituents and explain themselves as they OBVIOUSLY are NOT performing their duties as representatives working on law and order of these United States.

The resolution doesn't force him to do anything. But after being passed by both houses, it goes to him for signature, and he can decide whether to sign it, or not. It will be instructive to see what he decides.

A resolution is non-binding, so it would not force Trump to do this. To require him to sign it or not forces him to take a stand about it, though.

Why waste the time when there are more pressing matters as Health Care, rising Debt, need to find stimulants for jobs etc???

It took hardly any time at all, as it was passed unanimously in the Senate and without objection in the House. And these kinds of declarations are important. Congress can work on multiple things simultaneously.

Is still 'wasteful' as to time.

Hardly. The increasing prominence of white-supremacist and Neo-Nazi's is a matter which requires condemnation from those at all levels of public policy responsibility. It takes very little time and it's important that the concepts of freedom and racial/ethnic equality be supported, as they are fundamental to this nation's existence.

"How can they pass a Resolution to force someone even the President, to make such a statement?"

Because as POTUS, the Head of State, he does not just represent YOU and those others just like you that voted for him.

Which parts of ""I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

... don't you and Trump understand ?

How is calling for the ... well, what are the alt white supremacist' Nationalists' goals relative to the Constitutional Rights of "them" American citizens of the inferior races, exactly ?

As that is ultimately what you are defending, I'll have curiosity of allowing you you to define those goals, knowing that I could quote plenty of hatefulness, but in fairness what in hell do think that are you are now defending, really, exactly ?

No one says they do not have the right to express hatefulness, but condemning it, condemning Fascism, is not both not wrong, nor not defending the Constitution and some Americans' rights.

In fact, the a'hole talking about their heritage is one thing,, but how is it not our American heritage to reaffirm the sacrifice of all those that died defeating Fascism, some of whom still live ?
