Re: Another moronic jury demonstrates its stupidity
quote: As for the jury; I'd need more details! I think Doctors have to start taking more care in some of their decisions! In commercials we've started hearing "tell your doctor ..." instead of being truly diagnosed to get something! Just requesting a drug shouldn't be enough! Some DOCs maybe afraid of losing a client which is so against the "Hippocratic Oath" IMO!-Fiero
I don't see the need for more details since the doctor couldn't possibly have been guilty of second degree murder. When people overdose through their own use of a legal prescription narcotic no murder has taken place. That means that a jury finding a doctor who prescribed those drugs guilty of second degree murder is either insane or extremely stupid and biased. I believe that the latter is much more likely in this case.
And while I agree that more than just a desire for narcotics should be involved when a doctor prescribes narcotics, even if a doctor prescribed them based only on that desire doing so wouldn't be second degree murder if any of the patients overdosed.

Re: Another moronic jury demonstrates its stupidity
On the subject of dangerous activities (UK figures because I cant find US ones but you can pretty much multiply the UK ones by six for a rough estimate of US figures)
every year -
About 7 people die as a direct result of putting on socks or pantyhose
-In 2003, 11,788 people were taken to hospital following accidents while putting on socks, pantyhose or stockings
about 30 people drown in their bathtub
about 11 accidentally suffocate in bed
about 250 accidentally strangle themselves
yes life's dangerous, you do well to survive it

True. The "war on drugs" is really about fighting an alleged sin, not saving lives.

The last kind of fatal accident certainly seems more probable. Some of those first two kinds of "accidents" may not have been accidental, just ruled to be accidents by medical examiners. For that matter, some of the third kind may not have been accidents either.

Re: Another moronic jury demonstrates its stupidity
actually surprised that as few as 30 drown in their bathtub, I find that the number of people in the US drowning in their bathtub has doubled in the last 10 years apparently 90% of them are elderly.
Easy to imagine the mechanism (without resorting to nefarious actions by second parties)person lying in hot bath blood pressure drops (because they are lying down and warm) they stand up get dizzy fall bang head and drown.
apparently those recorded as being strangled by becoming entangled by bed sheets (in the US) has rose from 327 (2000) to 809(2008) (from CDC) and again those effected are predominantly the elderly

Re: Another moronic jury demonstrates its stupidity
The third leading cause of death those over 65, is accidental injury, usually in the home. I couldn't find 30 bath tub drownings but I did find a site that said 341 in 2013 and FOX reported the same time 291, another site one daily. Seems more logical. The biggest stretch was a blogger on WSJ listing 4,866. From what I read most the victims are children. Most elderly can't get in or out of the tub. I haven't been on a motorcycle since the late 60's, young dumb men with exactly "to much bike," going way to fast, put me right off forever.

that was in the UK (2002 I think) the US figures are disproportionately higher - I would expect 180 (six times the UK figure to reflect the six times higher population) but it averages 355 per year (although that figure includes hot tubs - which arent common in UK)
