Welcome back, Mitt!

Orrin Hatch is retiring, clearing Mitt Romney's path to the US Senate. This will set up an interesting dynamic with Romney leading the anti-Trump charge among Republicans. It could lead to a tough primary battle between Romney and Trump in 2020.

Good luck, but remember psychological struggle within the mind of a literary or dramatic character, the resolution of which creates the plot's suspense: Hamlet's inaction is caused by internal conflict. 2. mental struggle arising from opposing demands or impulses.

Ah, but the Republicans only have 8 Senate seats in play in this year's election, so it's going to be very difficult for the Democrats to pick up the 2 seats they need to take control of the Senate. It could be even tougher, because their seat in Minnesota is up for grabs if Tim Pawlenty decides to run for it. If Pawlenty wins there, the Democrats would need to flip 3 Republican seats, and that's extremely unlikely.

I like Mitt Romney. He's a moderate which is pretty rare these days in either party. He realized before many what a disaster Trump would be.

Romney is better than Hatch (who isn't?), but he kowtowed to Trump when he thought he had a chance for the vice presidency, in my mind erasing his really good denunciation of Trump earlier. Since a Republican will win the seat in Utah, no matter who it is, Mitt no worse than any other.

Oh dear Belle, i can find fault with Romney’s cowtowing to Trump in an attempt to gain the VP nomination. But on the other hand two issues come to mind. First, Romney’s actions are simply those of a politician - ANY politocian. Second, while far from perfect, Romney would have been infinatly better than Mike Pence as VP.

All that being said, Romney is not even the besr possible Senate candidate. That would be Jon Huntsman. But sadly i do not envision Huntsman ever running for public office again. In that regard, Romney is a major improvement over Orin Hatch. And head and shoulders above any other possible candidate the Republicans can or will offer up. As far as a 2020 run for the presidency is concerned, a run either successful or unsuccessful, represents a positive, the possible removal of Donald Trump from office.
