If some one has a body which is at least as female as it is male in appearance shouldnt it be down the the individual what sex (not gender) they want to be?

There are XX males and XY females - fact is, a disproportionate percentage of female models are actually XY.
And an XY female can mature normally, experience menses, become pregnant and give birth to healthy children.
And it gets better - there's actually a condition that causes girls to become boys at puberty.

So a miniscule portion of births WORLDWIDE come up with a physical deformity where the SEX cannot be readily ID'd. The XX male and XY females are how many known in the ENTIRE population? Minimal numbers and you come up with a genetic mutation NOT a natural NORMAL condition.
Intersex for MULTIPLE conditions sounds like a made up word to compensate for what they cannot figure out.

cooter, learn something about the subject before you embarrass yourself anymore than you already have.
"Intersex" is the correct medical term - it's not a made up word and the fact that you haven't heard it before only means that you haven't heard it before.
But the BOY in the article linked in the OP is transgender - that's completely different than someone being intersex. What the term transgender means is that he was assigned female at birth because of his external genitalia but his gender is male.
BTW - gender isn't binary (i.e., male/female). It's perhaps most simply described as a continuum.

1 in 2000 is not a 'miniscule number' in the US never mind the world.
there are about 4 million children born in the US every year - that is about 2000 intersex/indeterminate sex children every year.
Ever heard of Cystic Fibrosis? well intersex/indeterminate sex is more common than CF
and once again - even though you are obviously not listening, 'sex' does not equal 'gender' and 'transgender' is the same as 'intersex'

The point wasn't the biology is it should a 17 y.o. be able to do it and that can only be answered by the 17 y.o. and the medical professionals that will run him through a battery of tests and interview him for several times over a period of time. It takes years to get to surgery and most don't do it for their own reasons or can't afford it. However I did read some insurances are covering the surgery.
