Re: America's cult of guns:
“F--k you, I like guns.”
America, can we talk? Let’s just cut the !@#$ for once and actually talk about what’s going on without blustering and pretending we’re actually doing a good job at adulting as a country right now. We’re not. We’re really screwing this whole society thing up, and we have to do better. We don’t have a choice. People are dying. At this rate, it’s not if your kids, or mine, are involved in a school shooting, it’s when. One of these happens every 60 hours on average in the US. If you think it can’t affect you, you’re wrong. Dead wrong. So let’s talk.
I’ll start....

Re: America's cult of guns:
It's not just guns. But add guns to an already violent society and ...
Why is America the Rich World’s Most Extremely Violent Society?
Or, The Unique Problem of Extreme American Violence
You know by now maybe that school shootings every 2.7 days are a uniquely American development. Yet they’re not really the uniquely and singularly gruesome American phenomenon — violence itself is.
Here’s a fact that might shock you. Did you know that America isn’t just the most violent nation in the industrialized world — but an off the charts extreme outlier”? Iceland is the world’s most peaceful society. Canada is the world’s 7th most peaceful society. America is the 94th.
You could even argue that America’s one of the world’s most violent societies, period, rich or poor. It’s 94 out of 160 — of which the last forty or are barely hanging on as societies. It’s developed unique and weird forms of soft and hard violence, like school shootings, opioid epidemics, people dying of a lack of insulin or basic medicine. Meanwhile, murder, domestic violence, extremism, “paramilitaries”, hate crimes, white collar crime, even, more than likely, the kinds of systemic harassment and abuse that we now see revealed by #metoo as normal in America, are often at, sometimes beyond, poor country levels.
The question is: why is such extreme violence normal in America? Not just at the level of laws or norms — but for what deeper reason America seems not to ever developed nonviolent ones. Let me begin with an observation.
Just one. That is all it takes to scar a society for life elsewhere.
Polytechnique. That is all you have to say in Montreal. Everyone will know what you mean. When a misogynistic gunman shot up a school in Quebec, it became a dark part and essential part of the history of that beautiful and gentle province. Denis Villeneuve memorialized in the haunting Polytechnique. Today, he directs Blade Runner. Did you know that?
Breivik. That is all you have to say in Scandinavia. Today, after a long period of trauma, it is dealing with the wounds left behind. But only perhaps. Because they are still raw. It is still debated. How could we have allowed this to happen? What did we ourselves do wrong to fail our children thus?
Perhaps my point is still opaque.
What would happen in other rich societies if extreme violence, like school shootings every 2.7 days, became some kind of gruesome norm? I can all but guarantee you that people would march down to their capitols, simply remove their government, and install a better one. They protest over little things like taxis. Their kids being massacred? It would be done democratically and peacefully. But there is no doubt that even a week’s worth of school shooting would cause something like a revolution almost everywhere elsewhere. Just one school shooting is all it takes to scar such societies for life, after all.
And yet. In America ...

Re: America's cult of guns:
quote: Yet I thought out of country buys are also Illegal in EU.
they are but the border is long and porous but also things legal in one EU country are illegal in others.
Non has ever claimed than a ban makes something impossible to obtain but it does make it harder - Cruz would have almost certainly have found it impossible to arm himself in the UK - he wouldnt have had the connections or the money
quote: IRA figured it out LONG LONG ago. Do not see why anyone else could not figure it out.
the IRA had not only a large network of supporters but also almost infinite funds things that almost all common criminals dont have - you dont get Americas queuing up to give money to buy guns for most drug dealers and bank robbers.
Cooter face it every thing you have said about the gun situation in UK supports the idea that a ban (or at least restriction because the only ban is on handguns) reduces gun use in crime. let me remind you 27 GUN HOMICIDES vs 8000

Re: America's cult of guns:
So he could not have engineered his own Napalm(mix gasoline, diesel and dry powder detergent) or used LP gas to flood the school and strike a match, or to arrive in a Car, SUV, light or heavy truck and done Just as he did here?
You all are insane if you consider he would not have tried ANYTHING to attain his desires.
Then this POTENTIALLY adds to the problem:

yes he COULD have done any of those things BUT HE DIDNT and neither does any one else.
stop getting all excited about what COULD happen and concentrate on what DOES happen
Number of people killed annually by home made napalm = NIL
number of people killed annually using FAE devices = NIL
Number of people deliberately mown down by automotives annually = not many
Number of people shot dead annually = 8000
(yes I can absolutely see where the problem is)
BTW just for the record your DIY napalm mix would be useless without a delivery system - which is probably why it really only gets used in McGyver films.

Re: America's cult of guns:
Not Many, really.
Some ARE attributed to 'Accident' where the driver died in the incident and no proof of intent determined, yet there are these:
