I think this is a fascinating phenomenon.

Newcastle can be the same, a strong accent takes time, especially Glaswegians. There was one guy on my dart team from Newcastle I never understood, the only one. I have no idea when I smiled and said yes, what I was replying to! African accents took me awhile to understand too.

Re: Foreign accent syndrome:

my first two children went to speech therapist at school three times a week. I didn't think anything was wrong with how they spoke, but they were both flagged by different teachers in different schools so i agreed to service paid for by the school district. We had moved from Miami Florida to Utah.

I think they were flagged because they spoke with a spanish speaking accent. Which is common when you grow up around Miami in the 80's. They had a Spanish speaking babysitter when i went to work when they were young.

Their accent didn't bother me, but it apparently bothered the teachers in Utah.

if they were Hispanic, i imagine the teacher's would of tolerated their accent.

I hate to admit this, but it is what it is.
Yes, i know i wasted taxpayers money. But it was a different time and place.

You didn't waste taxpayers money, you took advice to do the best for your kids. My accent changed in London, not to British, no way I'd be Madonna but I wasn't around any Americans except for visitors, my husbands accent has changed here as well, not as heavy as he is surrounded by Americans, it happens.
