It is a highly intellectual and subjective point to make, but don't all the American "christian" religious fundamentalists ultimately seek to see all of humanity, if not the whole universe, end in immolation, as their long promised "end times" come in fire not water, again ?
It was his body and his life, so his choice to make , misguided or not, but at least he did not wish to burn down the rest of the universe too. So, who among us is to judge ?
I'll also bet he was terminally sick, too, even if that is not reported.
BTW at a college where I went to there was a guy who immolated himself. I was lucky enough to not a be witness to it, but many were and they were traumatized by it as he did it in the middle of the quad, cross legged on the ground with a 5 gallon gas can and Zippo, at lunch time, for maximum effect, so to speak.
He was the lover of a good friend of mine, a woman who was my dear platonic friend ... who , well, realized that he was not very stable (all AFU'd and a sort of psychopath, in point of fact) so she broke up with him.
She was right to do so. My memory of meeting him was how charming and still at the same time how oddly hatefully jealous of me and so passively aggressive mean, all at once, he was.
My solution was. okay, she likes him but I don't, and even if can't say exactly why, especially to her, I'll just avoided them, which was easy as I went to sea.
So was she to blame ?
It was topic of discussion, sadly, but as I was away at sea when it happened, I only learn that upon my return. So without ever saying why to her, I was there for her, not only for her but eventually, for her husband, too, who had to deal with it, still long after the facts, and in in reality he kind of had to deal with it all the time, too. Yet only once did he bring it up with me.
I told him that I never trusted the guy, that I felt he was bad for her, but what I could say, so because I should have done better, I should have said something , now, because of all time before he met her, so me, I'm part your, his and her, life because I made the effort to be a a really loyal good friend ... not presuming to say like a best a friend, to her, then to them both ... because she, despite subjugating it all, it, was forever changed. So my role was to make her feel like she was still just like who she was, still the good person that she always was, before all that !@#$ happened .
He loved me for that, and I could tell it was only between him and me, as I felt, as I could tell that he never told his wife what I had said, because he just helped me do my (our ?) thing.
I was young, but knew to be like that because a another good friend of mine was raped. The difference was never speaking about immolation. In my experience woman need talk about their feelings about being rape to someone who does not judge them. But what can anyone say about someone burning themself to death that might help ?
It is all is very sad to me, still.
So, has anyone else here even known a person who set fire to themself ?
Even if it is just a fact, just a reality done by a total stranger, it is still incomprehensible to imagine, isn't it ?

Cooter, mental illness, occur in all walks of life.
Geezees, heart wrenching story, just amplifies how unstable people can sometimes be pushed over the edge, when they are rejected by a former partner. very sad, both events.

So sad. Don't think he was stupid, as he was a highly recognized man for all of his work helping the LGBT community.
Obviously he had some mental issues that had gone unnoticed.

Is it mental illness? I don't know I couldn't do it but Ghandi almost starved himself to death and Bobby Sands did, then there is Rachel Corrie and a bulldozer. I once heard the captain of the anti whaling state if you are not willing o die for a whale, don't come on my ship.
