Are things getting worse in race relations in America? What do you think?

The news seems full of reports about police shootings of blacks and even black protesters being shot dead. The tension between the races is palpable and violence is bound to escalate. Am I wrong to be concerned that things are getting worse in race relations in America? What do you think?]

I wonder if they really got better before going to the worse. After the civil rights bill it appears to me that some folks just shut up for awhile, it wasn't p.c. to be a racist. The net opened a whole new world for racism as did Obama's election and out of the word work they came. Trump and many of his supporters have really put it out there, I would not be surprised in his term if there were once again race wars. It's Hispanics, "the breeders" "the violent druggie, rapists and murders to the Muslims all being terrorists, then there are women and the acceptance of groping our bodies and these white racist groups aren't exactly fond of the Jewish and of course watch out for black men loitering in Starbucks, certainly her fear of calling the cops meant imminent danger........

The bad things are certainly widely reported more frequently than they were. The social media may be responsible for that, but they are more frequently reported on TV as well. My feeling is that they are not as bad as they were because they are far less socially acceptable than they were.

It appears to this foreigner that American racism has been bubbling away permanently.

Pretty much agree with what Katie said.

what i'm seeing played out in the news isn't healthy. i fear those who are acting out, have become embolden.

you will never be able to change people views e they all claim they don't have a racist bone in them, it's like they have blinders on.

All one can do, is ignore people who talk this way, and go to somebody aid when they are being grossly mistreated.

The positive side is that that racist acts are exposed in the news, not just accepted as being okay.

Is it like after a fight with a sibling.
They'll replace hassling you with complaining about you how are still doing it , whatever it was the that fight was about, but that is the beginning of moving e on.

On the radio, today, someone said MLK said ending racist isn't a line, rather an arc and that were are half way across.
My point is that acts of racist exposed at the top of the arc stick out as being unacceptable, with is progress.

The question seems to be; Are things worse regarding race relations or did they ever truly get better?

That's difficult to say.

I agree with Katie's comment "the net opened a whole new world for racism". We now have the possibility of a huge KKK-like association of people that communicate with each other online. They are out there, the question is how many?

I lean toward the idea that things are better than they were in the 50's and 60's. And they definitely seem better than the decades before that time.

But how much of that is because we have laws addressing equality not because people have changed?

If it were legal, would we still see "whites only" signs as much as in years past?

It is a fair but an ethocentric point.
The bigots are dieing out and will not being replaced.
How will bigotry work when the American majority is no longer "white" according the Jim Crowe 1% rule ... as if that might have already occured .
Only 23 and me, knows for sure, now !

I don''t think bigotry is dying out but in continual motion even as so many Americans intermarry and have children as is happening in other cultures and countries. It goes beyond colour, culture and at times for people in the same country of the same colour, culture, language and often religion.

I think it can die out. When i moved to the South, for whatever reason people there were way to comfortable talking about neighbors or co-workers who were of different racist, it was like their favorite past time, when they weren't in the room.

even my grandmother, was embarrassingly racist her son my father was not racist. He knew his mother was a racist, and was deeply embarrassed by her countless times as well as I. Now that she's gone her racist thoughts died with her.

Sometimes having a racist in your family, makes people realize how flawed their loved ones are.
