Maybe it's a little vague but otherwise it qualifies.

More specifically, universal background checks, penalties for those who supply criminals with guns. If someone has a criminal record of any sort of violence or the shooting of a gun where it shouldn't have been used no legal gun for them.

I also have no problem with licenses to carry one being required.

Tell that to John. Why would he start a thread like this one if he wanted women to carry guns for their own protection?

The reason I started this thread was to point out that having a gun too often ends up with someone getting killed.

If you were arguing for more men to carry firearms, I'd be saying the same things.

I simply don't see more guns in the hands of anyone - male/female - as a good thing.

there is a US tv show airing here called "Fear thy Neighbor" neighborhood disputes which result in some one getting shot when they should have ended in a fist fight at worst!

Its obvious that the mere presence of a firearm is inclined to escalate the level of violence - if you want to mug an unarmed woman you will probably just wave a knife around and scream give me your money if you think that she is armed then you stab her first (before she can shoot you) then you take the money AND the gun

But it's OK for there to be guns in the hands of the police despite the fact that they keep shooting unarmed people who posed no threat to them?

So, your view is giving guns to women who appear to need them the most would be a bad thing but allowing cops to keep their guns is OK despite some of them using them to kill people in questionable circumstances.

In other words, the safety of cops is so important that we can risk a few unnecessary shootings but the safety of women isn't that important?

Why would the criminal believe the woman had a gun? Do you think she'd be carrying a sign saying "watch out, I've got a gun."

Just because he BELIEVES she has a gun doesnt mean that she ACTUALLY has a gun.

At the minute a small percentage of women are routinely armed (according to you) therefore it is fairly safe to assume that a woman isnt armed if it became common for women to be armed then it no longer holds that most women are unarmed (simple really if you actually think about it)

But then it is really quite rare for a victim male or female to shoot their attackers - other than in a home invasion situation - which is why when it does happen it gets wall to wall coverage in the media

Exactly, Mais Oui.

This is the point that some do not seem to understand.

If someone is struggling with depression, give them a gun an you increase the chance of a successful suicide.

If someone is dealing with anger and resentment, give them a gun and you increase the chance they will end up murdering people.

If someone gets into an argument, give them a gun and you increase the chance they will use it to end the argument.

No other developed country has firearm deaths like we do because no other developed country has as many firearms as we do.

Murder is rare in my burb 0-1 a year, none have been by strangers all had personal relationships, last year 3 blocks from me an ex husband came to his in-laws where his ex and two kids were visiting and shot and killed her in front of the kids and her parents, couple years before two drunk buddies got in an argument and one shot & killed the other. Neither had any criminal history and had a right to own a weapon, that has become quite common and I remember a time when those non criminal types used guns for home protection, hunting or target shooting those persons were the good guys, bad criminals murdered people, now we see cops being the bad guy as well as that so called normal person
