The number of people killed while riding motorcycles is.

Is it?
By what definition?

It is significantly FEWER than die of overdose of prescribed drugs
It is FEWER than die as a result of being shot

FEWER than die of heart disease or cancer, or respiratory disease, or stroke, or Alzheimers, or diabetes, or 'flu,

In fact during the 'flu season 'flu kills more PER WEEK than die on motorcycles every year!

As I mentioned more than 60,000 people were killed while riding on motorcycles from 1999 to 2014 in this country, a recreational activity that they didn't need to be doing at all. They weren't fighting pain to make their lives more bearable. They were simply having fun.

That number seems pretty large to me being a little more than a third of the number of people who died from overdoses during that same period but I don't see the news media getting too excited about it. They do frequently mention motorcycle accidents but no media talk about any "epidemic."

WRONG!!!!!!

It is a little more than a third of the number who died of overdoses of prescribed opiates

If you include the number of those who died as a result of an overdose of illicit opiate it is far higher.

and just to be clear, few - if any - took an over dose in an attempt ease their pain

Talk about talking from your alimentary canal. You can't possibly know that 1. those overdose victims died purely from overdoses of prescription opiates and not mixtures of opiates with other drugs and 2. that few if any took an overdose in an attempt to ease their pain. As katie has pointed out there is psychological pain as well as physical pain.

And nothing you said changes the fact that far too many people died while riding motorcycles, a recreational activity that they didn't need to be doing. I want to hear the mass media in this country talking about the "motorcycle epidemic!"

Lots of things we do can kill us, showers and tubs can be killers. Addiction effects your life and those around you, we cannot have Pharmaceutical companies hiding facts, we cannot have doctors over prescribing to patients that do not need them, look what the end result is, patients in chronic pain who aren't addicted and post op patients are suffering

Lots of things can kill people but some things are extremely risky to use. Motorcycles are one of those things and their purpose is essentially just recreational. The very purpose that you don't believe narcotics should be used for even though they can be used more safely than motorcycles. There is no way to make motorcycle use safe. It is an inherently dangerous thing to do like playing lawn darts. To use narcotics safely all you have to do is follow the instructions and not mix them with other depressant drugs.

We can have doctors over prescribing to patients who do not need them. When they do that with narcotics it isn't any big deal if the patient doesn't take too much of the drug. If they do, that is the patient's fault, not the doctor's.

I agree that we should not have pharmaceutical companies hiding important facts from the public. People need to know exactly what they are using and what the risks are in using any drug they take. But risks involved in using narcotics are widely known and not at all kept from the public.

No we cannot have doctors over prescribing medication, it is against the law and doctors don't go to school for a dozen years to make their patients addicts, do no harm. Key words, a person buying a motorcycle is a person on their own buying their own injury/ death warrant if they choose for recreational purposes, which is like , a swimming pool or water activity, a gun, parachuting climbing a mountain, all your choice. It is said 25% of these overdoses are caused by doctors, that would be 25% less deaths if doctors didn't participate, you are suggesting not only addicting patients but killing them as well not in the job description, which is why you are wrong.

Apparently Jacinda Adern, the NZ prime minister, is going to appear on Colbert's tv programme this coming week.

No, what I am suggesting is that people take responsibility for what they do and stop trying to blame other people including doctors. If you take too much of a narcotic it doesn't matter how much you were prescribed. Every patient could overdose if they took too much of the drug they were prescribed with any initial prescription. The patient is supplied with enough of the drug to overdose if they don't follow the instructions.

How are doctors responsible for overdoses in the case of narcotics? The only way you would have a point would be if the patient took the prescribed dose and then still overdosed. Does that ever happen when patients take the prescribed dose of a narcotic?

Doctors no matter a narcotic or any drug or services are held to a certain standard and it is the way the vast majority represent themselves , that you don't get it is no matter.
