Re: Murder?

If my doctor prescribed a narcotic that I didn't need I still wouldn't become addicted because I know how to avoid that. That's what people need to know when using a narcotic as well as how to avoid overdosing on it. The latter involves following instructions and not mixing it with things like alcohol.

And yes, fentanyl has been around a long time but it getting into the black market due to massive amounts being shipped in from China is something relatively new. They've even shipped in carfentanil, a narcotic about 10,000 times stronger than morphine! It's used as an elephant tranquilizer.

You can't have people blindly taking drugs from a black market with things like that being substituted for heroin without dire consequences. Our government could have sprung into action and prevented massive numbers of overdoses by simply allowing people to legally obtain heroin.

I howled at your first sentence, you are an easy target. Carfentanil, I had to look that up, used for large animals, which says to me, no you cannot have people taking drugs blindly and that is under any circumstance. People who take oxy's don't want to be on heroin, totally the opposite. Pill people look down on heroin addicts and then there are meth/coc addicts who look down on heroin and pill addicts, then there are alcoholics who look down on all drug addicts. They all have a position. What the govt. should have done was stop the Sacklers when they took notice in 2003, I don't know how you can justify 70.000 deaths from a prescribed drug, not some funky cra[ from China. When the left talks about issues with pharma, this would be on the top of the list. Lobbyists!! Big money!!

I'm glad you got a laugh out of what I wrote but nonetheless I'm right about it being possible to avoid addiction while using narcotics. It may not be easy but it can be done.

As for one group looking down their noses at other drug users that is just silly. Recreational users of narcotics are no worse people than recreational users of any other kind of drug, including alcohol.

As for the government stopping the Sacklers, just what kind of stopping are you talking about? Stopping them from lying would have been fine but stopping them from manufacturing a legal product would have had no legal basis.

I can't justify thousands of fatalities from narcotic use, often in combination with other depressant drugs, but I also don't want to blame the wrong people for those fatalities. Such tragedies can and need to be avoided but blaming the wrong people won't accomplish that.

not if you make the product illegal first!

We used to have a widely used pain killer called Co-proxamol after it became implicated in a large number of deaths its use was phased out although its use was never actually banned it is now on a "named patient" basis (a doctor can only prescribe after consultation with the regulatory body) so its use is now almost zero

didnt YOU previously claim that narcotics were antidepressants?

That was called Darvon in the states, it was banned here in the mid 2000's or so although I hadn't seen it used at least a decade before that. It worked well in the elderly cause you could low dose without compromising the health of the older generation because of the side effects. Whether Oxycodone or Oxycontin, it is stronger. As I said Philer, the 3 drug companies facing lawsuits is different than ceasing the manufacture, as stated there are still over 20 pharma companies, who didn't lie, who are making oxycodone and oxycontin. It is a generic drug and any drug company is open to manufacture it, as long as they are truthful and hold up to what they signed on that dotted line.

When did I ever said narcotics lead to being a drug addict? Most people use narcotics without becoming an addict. It may be silly and it is, why certain addicts, look down on others addictions but they do. They had a legal right to stop the Sacklers from making narcotics, they broke their contract, it doesn't matter if it was about drugs or any issue, that is what happens when you have broken a contract, you loose the privileges you had, I call that life.

In UK its use was contraindicated in the elderly (due to its suppression of respiration)

Opioids are safest when used for three or fewer days to manage acute pain, such as pain that follows surgery or a bone fracture. If you need opioids for acute pain, work with your doctor to take the lowest dose possible, for the shortest time needed, exactly as prescribed.

If you're living with chronic pain, opioids are not likely to be a safe and effective long-term treatment option.

Re: Murder?

Research for decades has tried to come up with a drug that hits acute pain, especially for persons who have chronic acute pain with no joy. However the vast majority of patients that are dependent and use as directed is not addiction and overall the medical profession does not have an issue with dependence for those who can't physically function without or often are living with a terminal illness. Also to consider, liver damage, seizures, heart irregularities. Also remove pain from your life, you can miss a serious life threatening illness/disease, we need to feel pain.

"chronic acute" pain of both long duration and short duration?

Acute pain is a type of pain that typically lasts less than 3 to 6 months

Chronic pain persists for weeks or months

Chronic acute pain are those with severe arthritis, nerve pain, back pain, fibromyalgia, cancer, respiratory diseases. Some are on oxy plus fentanyl patch, some have several narcotics in the medicine cabinet for pain, from vicodin, to percocet to oxy. What is used is depended on the pain level and some go through this for years.
