Re: NAART

My thoughts are that it's a scam. That they may have paid for the art, but got the money back from the artist through a back door channel. something rotten besides the banana I suspect this because it's all so ridiculous. Not only the art but the buyer outrageous response.

This may be but I don't think so, they have this type of crap at the Tate Museum in London and it isn't a scam. I don't think it is specific to there but more common than we think. Jason Pollock paintings can go for 140 mil, I bet I can toss paint on a canvas as well.......

There are a lot of factors involved. One factor is not even having a reasonable concept of what art is. Another is not being able to recognize art when you see it or garbage when you see that. Another is depending on other people to tell you what art is and relying on the reputation of alleged artists like Pollock.

One of the most interesting aspects of this situation is the lack of appreciation for real art that exists and in some cases no acknowledgement that it is even art. So what we wind up with is garbage being prized as art while real art is overlooked and considered to be something much less than what it actually is.

Then you have the mass media contributing to that problem by promoting the garbage and ignoring the real art.

I am not enough into art to say what art is or isn't. I do know it isnt' a banana, a phone box on the wall or a pile of bricks. I know I'm not impressed with Pollock either but I also don't fancy those huge paintings of cupids, angels and curvaceous women either.

Re: NAART

I define art as the skillful manipulation of beauty. That can be in paintings, dance, music and other forms of art.

Perhaps more destructive to culture than people claiming some sort of crap is art is the failure to recognize actual art. That has happened a lot. And some of that failure to recognize it has been a problem for people who were supposed to be artists themselves, such as film makers.

You're probably not going to be a good film director or producer if you don't even recognize other forms of art when you're dealing with them as subject matter for your film.

Same as turn the channel but we still have the ability to say what we think is trash or when we think people are being taken advantage. If you had the money would you spend 10k on a purse or pair of shoes or 100k on a wedding dress? Not me and I do make comments.............

It might or might not be a art scam but it is a tax scam when donated to The Tate at "market value" , especially, if the artist kicks back some of the money to the buyer.
Hmmm, it could be done legally, too. The artist benefits in their reputation being increased. So if the artist hires the buyer as a consultant to increase his profile ...

ImageI am surprised many of you don't like Jackson's Pollock work.

I highly doubt anybody could throw paint, at a canvas and be as good as he was.Image

The only buyer would be the Tate or pieces are on loan. I read the Tate runs on about a million pounds a year so they are buying multi million dollar paintings.
