Bill Maher tackles obesity

Maher points out that it is an even bigger health issue during this covid pandemic, one which should not be ignored or excused. He's truly talking about a very dangerous elephant in the room, no pun intended.

I had the same thought many times.
About 400,000 a year dying from obesity, and instead we focus on covid-19? Makes no sense, considering how easy it is to prevent obesity.

Yeah, it's easy to prevent and very easy to fall off the wagon and fail! I hate giving us excuses, but we were terribly misinformed about dietary needs 30-40 years ago by the gov't; suggesting a table full of bread, fruits, vegetables, and proteins were essential to good health! After 60, I studied and started using intermittent fasting and I found it quite simple to drop 10-20 pounds just by skipping breakfast and not ingesting any calories for at least 16 hours!

It may sound extreme, but in the old days it was the norm to eat early dinner and not eat anything for hours thru sleep and missing breakfast! Those were probably the more healthy individuals! For anyone out there who needs to drop a few, I stopped eating at 6 PM and didn't eat again until 10 AM; usually a "Bullet Coffee" so my insulin levels aren't spiked! A simple grape or chip is all it takes to blow it! I lost 10 pounds the 1st 3 days without watching calories! To drop the next 10 or so I had to cut calories, but you have to get over the hump of hunger pangs, headaches, nausea, & listlessness! All the info needed is online or You Tube! emoticon

What makes you think there is no focus on obesity? I would say that is not true. What makes you think we can't address more than one disease at a time? Do we put cancer aside for Alzheimer's or Parkinson's for renal failure? No.

We can address obesity all we want! The problem is, it isn't getting thru! You have a select few who go all out to eat right and exercise, but overall we're lazy, self-indulgent, and are all to willing to make excuses and pass the buck! When I finally decided last year to do something about ballooning up, it was amazing to actual see advertisement thrown at us around the clock! In one commercial break of a program, there had to be a dozen ads for food; buying, eating, preparing, and ordering prepared boxes! It's no wonder we're getting heavy across the country! This pandemic doesn't help with most people staying in and packing on the pounds! emoticon

I am more the hyperactive type, so never was too heavy.
When I switched from cold climate to warm, and from physical labor to computer programming, I had to dial down food intake, but not much. I just skip sugar, salt, and grease.
So it does not seem that hard to me.
I am inherently a cheapskate, so fast food does not appeal to me.

But the point is that since we do not seem to care much about the 400.000 a year that die from obesity, then 150,000 likely is not a large number either.

Bollocks, obesity is addressed in this country to the point of what was it NY banning soda? Then there was Mischelle Obamas eat healthy program. Putting food in your mouth is a choice, there are diseases that are not a choice. You don't care that 155,000 have died and not from overeating, the difference is not comparable.

The point is that if our choice is to accept 400,000 obesity deaths a year, then it is bizarre to then claim 150,000 deaths a year is such a catastrophe. It not only is a contradiction, but shows we simply do not understand statistics. A death total is not relevant. What only matters is the %. And the % of people dying from covid-19 is tiny. Just 0.039% of the population.

I may just be a little tired, but I'm not getting this! You're only questioning our unequal response to 2 ailments; C-19 & Obesity? Obesity is something self-contained obviously! It isn't infectious for the most part! With C-19 you can be walking along minding your own business and if some person with the virus coughs without a mask, it's a good chance it'll pass on! It's like with the populous wondering why we don't have a problem with hundreds of thousands dying from cancer and alcoholism, but only a handful die from AIDES! You have to worry about the AIDES infections more because it can be spread! A cancer or a drinker is only hurting themselves with cigarettes and alcohol for the most part! I resent 2nd hand smoke, but don't think it'll kill me! I'd much prefer killing the inconsiderate smoker! emoticon

No, if someone walking by coughs without a mask on, it is NOT at all likely you will get infected.
In fact, research has not found a single case of anyone getting infected outside.

The average transmission of those who are infected, is about 2.
So that means covid-19 is hardly infectious at all.

And infection rates are not at all relevant.
If you only just get a little sick, which is all that happens to 99,99% of those who get infected, then what is the big deal?
The common cold has about 100% probability you are going to get it this winter, but that is no big deal because almost no one dies. Similarly, almost no one dies from covid-19.
