Here's how much Obama's pension is worth:

http://money.cnn.com/2017/01/20/news/obama-pension/index.html

[Granted we can't have our retired Presidents begging for change on a street corner but gees....how much do they need to live comfortably? Most of them will make millions giving speeches and writing their memoirs so why do they need all these taxpayers dollars? What do you think about this?]

It's an extremely small expense considering the service provided by the people who have served as President.

$207,800 per year sounds a lot but compare it to the last Irish president (who has a wholly ceremonial role) she gets €141,000 (a little over $150 000) pension arrangements for out going UK prime ministers are a bit complicated but £100 000+ is ball park

i thought it was going to be more.

No wonder former presidents supplement their retirement by giving paid speeches.

in fairness it is more - much more.
the figure quoted is the 'pension' but they also get to claim (taking GW Bush as an example - others vary)

travel allowance $10 000
office space $434 000
communications $80 000
printing $20 000
other services $64 000
supplies/materials $28 000
equipment $50 000

Compared to what many CEO's make, it's pocket change.

they are not usually CEOs and when they are they get paid for that separately.

I find it had to get my head around what a past president does (for the country or as a direct result of his former employment) that necessitates in nearly of half a million on office space or which requires $80 000 to be spent on 'communications' (Clinton spends only $11 000 on this)

I understand that their former position might entail them traveling the world for meetings and the like for a couple of years after their presidency BUT how can GH Bush justify $56 000 on travel (for the record the total expenditure by former presidents amounts to just $66 000 but both checks are made out to a Bush.

again the total claimed for 'equipment' by all former presidents combined is just $81 000 - GH Bush getting $23 000 and GW Bush getting $50

to an outsider it does look very like snouts in the trough

Seems like they should get paid about that amount, but that they also should be regularly accessible for duties in order to earn it.
It would seem they each have some valuable information, insight, memories, etc., that should be made available.
I keep thinking of that Sean Connery movie, "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen".
It bombed at the box office, but I kind of liked it, especially Captain Nemo.

It would seem to me that we should be taking all the advantage of any credibility we can?

such as what duties - most of them are too old to be called up into the military reserve!

Though I realized some people may think those are perks, I'm viewing them as the cost involved to maintain their legacy.
