When it comes down to it, I don't think we eat that much different other than dishes from our culture but that is true here as well not just in another country. I have no idea what grits or collard greens taste like, other than a picture I haven't seen them either. We do however do it better but the UK is catching up as the older generation goes. I did not have the nerve to tell my MIL you do not cook the colour out of green vegetables nor till they are mush.

we often joke that my mother puts the christmas brussel sprouts on to boil on dec 1 - its an exageration but not by much!

she once served up a plate of boiled pasta - boiled to a gloop - nothing else just the pasta!

We are currently having some pretty odd meals as getting ready for the summer means emptying the freezer, last night it was buffalo steaks (water buffalo not the bison type) tonight it was goose breasts. when we are away I obsessively visit farmers markets and buy 'odd' stuff which invariably gets tossed into the freezer and forgotten about!

Speaking of sandwiches, I have some favorites including roast turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce. Grilled cheese, salsa and onion and Montreal smoked meat and Swiss cheese. Yummy!

A Few observations about food, culture, and my personal tastes. I grew up in Trieste, in the extreme northeastern corner of Italy. Osensibly a part of Italy, Trieste, the northernmost port on the Adriatic and surrounded by its border with Slovenia (part of the old Yugoslavia), was for over 500 years a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Therefore the local cuisine, like the entire culture has been a unique blending of Italian, German, and Slavic influences.

I grew up eating a light breakfast, that generally consisted of coffee (strong and black) and a pastry of some sort - most often a German pastry rather than Italian. It was only after I came to the U.S. At age 16 to live with my paternal grandparents that I encountered the introduction of meat and eggs into a breakkfast. that first morning on the farm when my grandmother awoke me at 5 a.m. For a bteakfast of fried or scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, know (Midwestern version of scrapple), fried potatoes, pancakes, biscuits, jams, preserves, honey, and syrups, as well as orange juice and coffee. Welcome to a Midwestern farm kitchen!

Even atter 50 years I have never become accustomed to large American breakfasts. In particular I may have one poached egg a couple of times a week. But rarely if ever have meat, or potatoes, or grits. Generally, my breakfasts consist of coffee (hot, strong, and black), and some type of pastry or bread, and either a fruit or juice.

Thanks to geography - the Adriatic coast - fish and seafood were a major component in my diet, while growing up. And even today I prefer seafood and poultry (with the exception of chicken which I detest) to red meat. In particular, today I rarely eat beef or veal. And I cannot tell you the last time I had lamb or mitten, which I cannot stand). I guess it was a lamb stew I had in a so called Irish pub, back when we were still living in San Francisco. And that means it was at least 27 years ago.

I have never been a fan of wild game, other than some of the foul like pheasant and duck. !you can't pay me enough to eat venison. Which my deer hunting friends are constantly trying to give me as a gift.. We won't even discuss the larger and/or exotic game animals. Well so much for all that. Time for breakfast - grapefruit, toasted bagel with cream cheese and raspberry preserves, and s one strong black coffee. 😄

One further observation about my personal tastes. I could survive in total bliss if all I had to eat for the rest of my life was soup, bread and coffee. With an occasional sandwich made from the bread. That was why I survived quite well in Russia. Because as a general rule the Russians ruined almost anything that came out of their kitchens. The exceptions? They made first rate coffee, soups, and breads.
