Re: Too stupid to ignore

From what I have read, it was only about a third who wanted to rebel from England, a third who wanted to stay British, and a third who did not care.

The only reason the rebellion succeeded was because those who wanted to rebel were more the wealthy elite, so were more influential.

But don't get me wrong. I favor the rebellion because the old European ways, monarchies, etc., are obsolete.

It is irrelevant that monarchies and old European ways are obsolete. They were obsolete for Canada and Australia as well as for America but there was no need to have a bloody rebellion over that.

What we gained by rebelling seems to be less than what we would have gained if we had not.

Just in regard to national health care alone Canada has a leg up on America.

You can't count Australia, the first shipment to the penal colonies wasn't till 1788 and as far as the Canadians, the population was guesstimated at 90,000, the US, 2.5 million at that time. Canada did not have the set up the states had and they were also fighting the French/Indian Wars.

The fact that the American population was much larger than that of Canada doesn't mean that we should have broken away from England.

We were a significant part of the British Empire at the time and our importance and power would have only grown. It's highly doubtful that we were or would have been oppressed by the British government at any time enough to justify a bloody revolution.

We most likely could have avoided three costly wars just by remaining a part of the British Empire.
