My take:

Leave the statues, leave the connotations in the historic records, TEACH from those inanimate objects the wrong that did occur and how it has been atoned at least in as much as has been here. For if ignored the powerful spirited and minded may rise up to repeat those wrongs in the near future.

Maybe then we as Humans can stop hiding our closet skeletons, we can teach AND learn from those that have mistakenly taken a wrong turn before but the demonstrated abuse evidence need be left intact AND visible.

As to slavery, it exists yet today in Asia where Africans are used as indentured servants to be mistreated and beaten some even killed if they perform poorly, in India where sweatshop manufacturers still rule the roost, in Malaysia, Taiwan, the list goes on and on many for sex traffic slaves as well.

Just for the record, I would be totally opposed to any effort to completely destroy all relics of the Confederacy, just as I would with Nazi relics or any other part of history.

But what we do with those relics, where we have statues and fly flags, says something about our culture.

What is a black child to think when his parents tell him the history of Confederates and how they wanted keep his ancestors slaves but his neighbor flies a Confederate flag? Or even worse, he sees it flown over a the state capitol?

The fact that so many fly the flag with pride shows that people haven't learned our history.

Imagine if those in the North flew the Union flag of the Civil War. (Not the current 50 star flag but the 36 star flag.) Imagine if they flew it claiming Northern pride and heritage, like a 150-year-old reminder to the South that they lost the war.

Odd you say that as the most visible people of N.O. defending these statues as they were removed were of African or mixed race heritage. There is NO ONE in the US of any "Pure" blood line, we all have all nations within our DNA, so to claim one is better than another is stupidity in action.

Again, where does the line cross? Where does this stupidity stop? Once enacted it most likely will not be stopped until everything visible with any negligible history to pre Civil War era is down and gone. The flood gates as with other ridiculous actions are now open.

If slavery did not still exist in the US right now, then we would all be represented by unions and all have access to public health care.
And we certainly would not have invaded Iraq.

Speaking of "Too stupid to ignore"
... can someone explain to me how the attack on Fort Sumter was not State sponsored emoticon terrorism, measured by the standards of it's day OR today's ?

The tactics of Brig. Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard were just same as those as the Taliban and Isis use against government outposts, especially in in Helmut Providence.

Cooter, people who are racists think they are better than someone else simply because they have lighter skin.

if you really think about it, how stupid is that?

so, you tell me how that is normal or rational
when someone who is racists attempts to put someone in their place because of the color of their skin?

not sure what is going on with you, i think you should seek professional help. Talk about being one of the walking wounded. This rant of your is very dark

Hell no, there was a strike they left the job. My grandfather was given a job during the depression by the WPA, helped paint the Golden Gate Bridge, he was not formerly a painter but it gave him a good paying job for the rest of his life and my maternal family adored FDR. Along came my dad and uncle, anti union, republican, didn't work for me and you end up with a politically divided family, makes for great debates, that us democrats always win! emoticon

But that's the old "we can't do one thing because it will lead to other things" argument.

I don't buy it.

I don't believe anyone wants to do away with everything related to the Civil War, they simply do not want certain statues and flags that represent the Confederacy to be part of the government.

In Germany, they were so disgusted with what the Nazis did, the death and destruction and atrocities, they have banned a lot of Nazi related things. Some of the people there that still admire the Nazis have taken to flying the Confederate flag because they cannot fly the Nazi flag. That should tell us something.

What it means is that most Germans were ashamed of what those leaders did and that they followed them. It was their way of rejecting everything about the Nazis.

The South never did that. Many in the South have acted like they were in the right and wished the Confederates had won. And they have been doing this for over 150 years.

Rather than admitting they should not have started a war and tried to continue slavery, rather than put it behind them and keep things in museums and memorials, they acted as though they were proud of those times. Totally the opposite of what Germans did.

Geezes you fully mistake an action of declared war upon an aggressor as Terrorism, The South had declared a state of secession where the Union forces at Sumter were within the boundary of that secession. I propose you actually tour the grounds and listen to the attendants, very enlightening if not somewhat depressing to note the major amount of damage that Fort Sumter sustained was due in fact to Union counter-attack later in the War.
