Welcome to the summer!

The solar summer centers around June 21, which is the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. Its been a very rainy spring in my neck of the woods with blistering hot days when its not raining but mostly soggy and cold.

I find the weather forecast is only right about 40% of the time and I doubt anyone really has a clue what is going on because of climate change. I think our summer will be....well...unpredictable. What kind of spring did you have and what do you expect weather wise over the summer?

England is having its hottest June days in over 20 years (some reports say 40 years) London is having temperatures of 35c (95F)

much cooler here with day time temperatures in the mid 20s c ( high 70s F) although still very warm by local standards

Well, here in the Driftless Area where Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin come together it has been a truly mild spring. Which followed a relatively mild winter that followed two absolutely bitterly cold winters with near record snowfalls. Last summer was also a mild one around here. So I don't know what to expect this summer.

Re: Welcome to the summer!

After our near-record wet winter, we had a cooler and wetter than normal spring. But we're making up for that now with record heat - over 100F since last Friday, and setting record highs of 106, 107 and 108 each of the last three days. We're expecting to set records at least today and tomorrow, topping out at 110 or 111 tomorrow before beginning to cool down below 100 on Sunday or Monday.

It's early for this kind of heat, but it's probably going to be our only stretch like that this year. Outside of that, it will probably be our normal summer - lots of heat (25 or so days over 100) and no significant rain until sometime in October or November.

The NW made it to summer this week, into the 80's with cool nights, finally! My brother lives in Palm Springs, going to hit 120. The rest of my family are suffering that 111.

I heard on the news last night that Phoenix closed it's airport, I don't recall that happening before, although I never knew it was an issue, till it was explained.

Phoenix didn't close its airport but American Airlines did cancel dozens of flights that use smaller jets - CRJ class that are much smaller - 50 passengers or fewer - than the 737's and larger used for most flights. Their explanation was that the extremely high temperatures -over 117 - prevent sufficient lift for smaller aircraft fo take off and land safely.
