how to get things wrong
this morning at aboyt 4.30 some 13000 people assembled at stonehenge to see the mid summer sun rise.
I wonder how many knew that they were there at the wrong time on the wrong day and were looking in exactly the wrong direction?
still they seem to have enjoyed it
annoying though that this is the only time you can get within touching distance of the stones

How could all those people make the same mistake?

Re: how to get things wrong
they make the same mistake every year!
Stonehenge was built to mark the setting of the midwinter sun, there are several similar prehistoric monuments designed to mark the setting midwinter sun.
Due to a fluke of nature at stonehenge midsummer sun rise is exactly 180 degrees from mid winter sunset so if you go on mid summer sun rise and face the wrong direction you get the effect that it was designed to mark the event.
Still Salisbury plain in June is so much more inviting than it is in December. I can totally understand why they dont want to go there then

I can imagine it is more important to know when winter is going to be over and time to plant, rather than times the plants themselves dictate.

Nah, just turn on the local news. The first time I was there it was as a tourist, the next few taking tourists, the first couple times there it was not fenced off, you could walk around and touch, it was free and no official persons around and not many tourists either, sometimes we were all alone.

yes it used be great then (post battle of the beanfield) English Heritage did their level best to destroy the experience, apparently it is now better than it was but until there is access to the stones it will never be acceptable

Not to quibble, but it is not due to "fluke of nature" it is just the opposite manifestation of the same celestial mechanism.
The notion that those building it, dealing with notion that the sun appears to stand still for three days at the apparent end of its arch of travel was not know to the designers is modern arrogance,

yes but the fact that midsummer sun rise and mid winter sun set are exactly 180 degrees apart is a fluke - it doesnt happen every where
