Dangerous men:

Record-Breaking Canadian Sniper Kills ISIS Fighter With Two-Mile Shot. The shooter would have had to account for wind, distance and even the curvature of the earth.

{Its a nasty business and I hate war but I have no sympathy whatsoever for ISIS fighters. Not after all the atrocities they have carried out. I would like to see everyone of them dead. I wouldn't have thought it was possible for a bullet to travel two miles!]

a bullet from even a 'normal' gun will travel a prodigious distance but usually by that time they have become hopelessly inaccurate although it might still have sufficient energy to kill

the equation for how far a bullet will travel is this-
Range = u²sin2A/g
Where A = angle of launch,
u = velocity of launch
g = acceleration due to gravity

if you put in somme numbers
 g = 9.81m/s²
angle of launch = 45°
launch velocity of AK47 bullet, 715m/s

once you do the math that comes out at about 32 miles!!

but that takes no account of air resistance or other downward forces (such as rain)

and of course at that range it will be totally spent with no remaining energy

Re: Dangerous men:

The bullet fired from a TAC 50 is a .50 BMG machine gun cartridge.

John Browning developed the cartridge and the delivery weapon in 1919, has been in use since as nothing developed since compares.

1.0 ballistics coefficient on the factory bullets, 2500+fps muzzle velocity and capable of penetrating 1 1/8" armor plate at one mile(1760 yards).
I shoot competition with a .50BMG cartridge rifle, we shoot 1000 yard ranges for accuracy as well groupings of five rounds. Easy enough at 1000 yds. to keep all five in 11" circle where the champions keep the groups under 5".

Your formula is flawed, must account for bullet weight, ballistics coefficient of the projectile, wind, atmospheric density, heat deformation of ground air currents, there are more. Even shot at a optimum range at optimum angle of attack and atmospheric conditions the projectile of a 7.62x39mm rifle will travel around three maximum four miles. Degradation is exponential not lineal.

Re: Dangerous men:

Sorry, I do not like snipers or believe in them, just as I think assassination drones are a war crime.

There is no way one can really tell anything at all about a target from that distance.

ISIS may not even exist as we think we know it, and it could easily all be a fake US bit of propaganda.

No Canadian or US soldier should even be there.
And there is no excuse for killing anyone there.
It is not in defense, so it is just murder.

Re: Dangerous men:

Very good soldier of Vietnam conflict was a well adjusted sniper, knew his target, knew his job and was sent deep behind enemy lines many times. Carlos Hathcock AKA White Feather. At one time the NVA had a million dollar bounty for his head.

There is a purpose and place for snipers, these men (shooter/spotter) had information as to the man they took out, was an ordered call.
