Ancient Egyptians may not have been from Africa?

Ancient Egyptians may not have been from Africa?

Scientists analyzing mummy DNA find that the closest ancient relations were from the Near East and Europe.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/22/health/ancient-egypt-mummy-dna-genome-heritage/index.html

[Modern Egyptians are very proud of their ancient ancestors but DNA seems to say they weren't even related. What would bring folks from the near East and Europe in those days is unknown but DNA says they were there. We do know Cleopatra was a Greek and the Romans were around as well. This will open many new areas of investigation and research with very interesting results.]

Some figures in Egyptian art are depicted with dark skin and negroid features

Image

Narmer (Reign: ca. 2650 B.C. — 2632 B.C.)

Image

Huni (Reign: ca. 2650 B.C. – 2632 B.C.)

Image

Mentuhotep II (Reign: c. 2046 B.C. – 1995 B.C.)

the above undeniably have negroid features not found in Europeans

I saw a NatGeo program awhile back on this, study was ongoing but they had definitely assigned Eastern European genetics to a few of the mummified monarchs. Presumption as to forced migration south(back to Younger Dryas) and a dominant attitude may have brought them into the region and into power position.

YD predates ancient Egypt (by which I mean the pharoahs, pyramids and all that) by several thousand years

Re: Ancient Egyptians may not have been from Africa?

What I have read is that there was not only a large split between the upper Nile Egypt of the south and the northern lower Nile Egypt, but also of the common vs ruling class.

The southern group would be the Kushites, and while likely dark, were not Black. It is likely they became the pharonic class, as they extended their empire north.
Coastal groups they likely created were the Numidians and Meshwesh.

Now they can only be found in the people we call Berbers, on the coast in Morroco, Algeria, Libya, and perhaps a little of the French Rivera, and inland in northern Africa, like the Touareg.

They are described as having a distinctive, delicate bone structure, tall and thin, with a skull described as slightly triangular, with a pointed chin.

Of course there were many invaders from all around the Mediterranean, like the Hyksos and other "People of the Sea". This could also include the Minoans.

The traditional enemies were the Black Nubians to the south, and the orientals like the Mittani and Hittites to the north east.

i think this article is misleading. The modern Egyptian population shows sub-Saharan Africa DNA for the most part so they should be proud of their heritage.

Ancient drawings show yellow and red humans on walls. so it shouldn't be a big surprise to find out that some of the mummies they've done DNA testing on are from western Asia.

They were there trading.

The tests done in 2017 while they are considered more reliable than the test in 2012, still show that the 30 mummies they tested from central Egypt carried more African clades, which is consistent with today's Egyptian population.

you go that far back in time, of course you are going to get a mixture of DNA from the ruling class since they were there to trade and expand their dynasty.

what they have done is looked at a small population from quite late in the culture and got a result which may not be representitove of either the whole population or of the whole culture.

the mummies tested dated from between 1400 BC and AD 400

Certainly by AD 400 the Greeks Romans and Persians had trampled through the place.

Akhenaten falls within that period and goodness only knows where he came from - he doesnt look like any other Egyptian nor did he think like an Egyptian.

between 1000 and 650 (approx)BC the Assyrians ruled the country

300BC to 30 AD the Greeks and Macedonians ruled it followed by the Romans

So its little surprize that the gene pool was polluted
