The driver has been cited and arrested (in hosp.) as to the wreck. No real details but suspect C&I charges. There are electronics on these machines these days, they are retrieving them for data investigation.
Horrible tragedy for the families, horrific for the kids that survived. Will change how bus especially school bus operations continue after the investigation. As far as I am concerned busing has been out of hand for decades, the thought of putting kids on these machines after working on them for over fifteen of my years as a mechanic and seeing how truly

Terribly sad. I feel so muCh for all of the children, both tnose killed and the survivors, as well as the famiLy and frIends of the victims. In particular.lar my sympathy goes out to the parents who are struggling to come to terms wiTh the enormity of thiS tragedy. Halving lost a four year oLd son to a rare form of cancer 28 years ago, I can attest to the fact that a parent never truly overcomes that loss. The best you can hope for is the ability to come to terms with that loss, and live with it. But it continues to haunt you throughout the rest of your life.

Our farm is served by a completely rural school district that .covers over 500 square miles, including six small communities with populations ranging from 300 to 2,000. While our children were in school, they rode buses that crisscrossed our district as they attended schools in three of those communities. , elementary,, middle school, aNd high school each located in different parts of this district. I constantly worried about those buses as they traveled up and down Iowa's gridiron pattern of gravel farm to market roads. But given the circumstances, and a long history of safely delivering lour children to their respective schools, it was a worry we had to live with.

There are recorders on these machines, electronics as to what the mechanical systems were doing and in cab recorder that records voice and picture so will see if this is not just hype and a woman intent on destroying the driver.

Seat belts, why not? I read on a site where a supposedly learned person stated they were not needed because the seats were high and padded, huh?

In Missouri schools seat belts were required on any bus built after 2012 along with the high backed and more heavily padded seats. they tried for rear facing seats but found children that are prone to car sickness get so rather quickly facing back. As far as enforcing use, I have no idea how one could.

25 to 35 loose children on a bus, the electronics just to validate the belts in use on a weighted seat would be enormously complex, cumbersome if not downright obnoxious to keep functional, then for those students not the correct minimum size what then, allow them internal damage as the belts set up for the average size would be too open or for the larger kids not able to be fitted? A whole lot more complex than riding in Momma's Soccer Van. Then timing, a limited time for the run to get them to school or to drop off for home, they fail to buckle up the driver stops, he walks the aisles and all is good only to have the kids drop the belts as he seats, then repeat. Fairly easy to picture a runaround and a long trip that ends up with kids late one way or the other and trouble not to them but the driver. Hard enough getting reasonable drivers now.
