Re: What the hell happened to my country?

Abstinence is NOT at all a reasonable birth control plan.

Sex is a prime motivator.
More so then food or anything else.
Many species kill over it.
It is likely the single most important natural instinct, and if ignored, it is pretty much guaranteed to ruing the life of anyone foolish enough to think they can ignore their DNA.

What happened to this country is that people's emotional preconceptions, like race, religion, etc., over over ridden their own sense of self preservation, and they are willing to harm themselves in order to be able to harm someone else.

It is the old story of the person jealous of another having a mule they did not, preferring to kill the other person's mule rather than trying to get a mule of their own.

I agree abstinence is definitely not a birth control plan, although there certainly are reasons to discuss, primarily that you are 'ready' which means you understand and accept the responsibility of having sex and practice birth control for an unwanted pregnancy and safe sex so you or others do not get an STD.

"I agree. It definitely works both ways. Conservatives should agree with all of those points you mentioned just as liberals should agree that unborn babies have a right to life."

I suspect that they do.
It is only pregnant woman that matter though.

Some of them are conservatives, too.
I've noticed the looks on woman, the wives and daughters of the big men on the stage at the GOP Convention during the regularly scheduled anti abortion brouhaha.

The reason that the SCOTUS ruled as it did is that conservatives girls ...the country club set, had access to medical, but legal, abortions, because the the Junior Leauge ladies told which doctors would do it, or they take a trip to Europe.
Remember ?
It was decided that it was a law that did apply to all Americans equally.

You may be right about at least some of the country club set but a lot of conservative Republicans who don't belong to country clubs really believe that abortion is morally wrong. They see it as the moral equivalent of murder.

What I find so interesting is why they still believe that so long after the rational ruling legalizing abortion in Roe v Wade. I partly blame the media for that because it could have done much more to explain that ruling and why it makes sense. That could have prevented a lot of violence and irrational political nonsense that happened since then. It also might have prevented the sharp political division that currently exists in this country.

I think what may be a secret is that morally conservative or religious girls/women do have abortions and more than the public thinks or their spouse, church, relatives and friends know.

Quite possibly but that is not relevant to the thinking of a lot of conservative Republicans. They believe that abortion is tantamount to murder.

Until they need one.
Just how honest are the all the Baptists about what goes on at the camp meeting ?
There are consciences, especially if you do teach young women about sex, and because of what was said above is true, not in sprite of it, they must learn to lie about what they have done, forever.

As Katie said: "I think what may be a secret is that morally conservative or religious girls/women do have abortions and more than the public thinks or their spouse, church, relatives and friends know."

Check the stats: http://abort73.com/abortion_facts/states/

At a glance you match up red and blue States ... more to the point, "Christian"ones with a secular ones pretty even.

The high rate in Washington DC is likely because of this seldom seen fact:

Who's getting abortions? Not who you'd think - Health - Women's ...
www.nbcnews.com/id/22689931/ns/.../whos-getting-abortions-not-who-youd-think/

"The numbers tell a far more complex story in which financial stress can play a pivotal role.
Half of the roughly 1.2 million U.S. women who have abortions each year are 25 or older. Only about 17 percent are teens. About 60 percent have given birth to least one child prior to getting an abortion."

So working women, the working poor, who are under economic pressures are who are having the most abortions all over the country and in Washington DC their are plenty of them, like the all the woman that keep the government open.

You will not change a conservative's mind even with a SCOTUS ruling anymore than they can change your views guys and gals. They stick to their guns as hard as you do so then the dilemma.

Find some reasonable mid-ground and the tug of war continues to a lesser degree yet continues as one side tries to one-up-man-ship the other for pride or self satisfaction or just to show off as top dog in charge.

No they don't, I just don't "think" conservative women have abortions and plenty of them, I know they do. They don't always stick to their guns when it's them in a crisis and they don't listen to the top dog church leader, the politician or husband/father either.

If a conservative's mind can't be changed when confronted with the truth then that conservative is irrational. The same thing is true of any liberal. You have to have a mind open to the truth to be a rational human being.

I believe one reason why conservatives don't consider Roe v Wade to be a valid ruling is because they don't know exactly what the Supreme Court said in that ruling. Some of them just believe they do without reading it.

Have you read the ruling, cooter? Have you gone over it word for word? If not, you have no justification for rejecting it as invalid. You'd have to at least read it and understand it before making any justified claim that it wasn't a good ruling.

In reality it was one of the best Supreme Court rulings. It essentially provided the middle ground that both liberals and conservatives should have been able to agree to. There is nothing about that middle ground that is unreasonable or unacceptable to a rational person.

Unfortunately since Roe v Wade the mass media in this country has done very little to educate the public about important parts of the ruling and has even misled the public about it.
