killer of abortion doctor gets more lenient sentence?

Man who killed abortion doctor gets more lenient sentence:

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/11/23/man-who-killed-abortion-doctor-gets-more-lenient-sentence.html

[ From what I understand many men have prostate problems and the most serious of them which is prostate cancer is highly curable. They don't mention how serious it is but they reduced his time in prison before being eligible for parole by half. Is that justifiable in your opinion? This man assassinated the doctor in church.]

He was originally sentenced to 50 years before being eligible for parole. They have now cut that in half.

25 years still isnt a lenient sentence OK it was cut in half but realistically does that matter, he is 58 years old now is he likely to live another 20 years? and even if he does being eligable for release doesnt mean that he will be released

True - but the original sentence was clearly intended to be "life" since it was pretty much a given that he'd die before he became eligible for parole. With the reduced sentence there is a possibility that he will be released before he dies - that will be up to the parole board at the time.

But that aside, since the intent of the original sentence was that he die behind bars there is no logical reason for the reduction.

His original sentence was invalidated by a Supreme Court decision, so he had to be resentenced. The prosecution, with the concurrence of the family of the victim, dropped the request for a longer sentence because he's still likely to die in prison.

Not sure a life sentence is ever valid?

It has problems because it makes the person much harder to deal with and more dangerous to prison guards. It also conflicts with the idea of sentences being to rehabilitate instead of just being revenge. And it also ignores the fact people have to change after some long period of time. And finally, this type of crime probably is a sign of some sort of mental instability, that is not like most other crimes. When you want to hold a person indefinitely, there should still always be mechanism for review, to ensure the sentence was originally valid and still is necessary.

Rigby none of the points you outlined makes a whole life sentence "invalid".

that has been done, this person is now not being held indefinately he will be considered for release after 25 years

Of course not every crime is due to insanity.
But when it is not for profit or personal gain and the person thinks they are going a good thing, then it probably is a question of sanity.

But I agree they fixed the sentence by allowing for the consideration of release eventually. I am just saying that a perpetual life sentence likely violates some of the basics, like the prohibition on cruel and unusual punishments, arbitrary punishments, punishments for revenge, etc.
