there are hundreds (maybe thousands I never counted them) of commandments in the OT covering every thing from who you may marry to how to build the ark of the covenant so how do you know that when Jesus refers to the commandments he specifically means the 10 that you have chosen?

when Jesus said that he was here to fulfill "the law" which of the commandments was he fulfilling (or was it all of them) Matt 5:17-8

when Paul speaks of salvation by grace not "the law" where does it ever say that the (10) commandments are the route to salvation?

are you familiar with the Humpty Dumpty school of theology

As I mentioned before I didn't choose them. Jesus specifically mentions them and calls them "the law." They are the ones commonly termed The Ten Commandments. Thou Shalt Not Kill, Thou Shalt Not Steal and so on.

And so, while Paul may not have said they are an important part of the route to salvation, Jesus did. If you're a Christian that should be pretty significant to you. Otherwise you probably should call yourself a Paulist rather than a Christian.

Yes, I'm familiar with the Humpty Dumpty school of theology.

Jesus specifically mentions them and calls them "the law."

And indeed they do form a part of "the Law" but only a tiny part. the entire first five books of the OT is mainly comprised of "the Law" and even then that isnt all of "the Law".

this Christian site
https://www.gospeloutreach.net/613laws.html
reckons there are 613 Laws Im not sure that that is correct but "the Law" is certainly more than 10 rules which the two major Christian churches cant even agree on (if you consult a protestant and a catholic version of the Bible you will find that the lists of the "10 commandments" differ)

I am not a supernaturalist of any hue but I find little of worth in Paulinism

Philer, you may have convinced yourself that Jesus wanted his followers to obey the 10 commandments which you elucidated but there is no biblical evidence and as we all know there in no non-biblical evidence that he ever existed.
As I read the new testament, Jesus seems to accept all the bullshit of the torah as well as the 10 commandments.

Worse than that Yobbo there is Biblical evidence that they didnt exist - or rather they existed but only briefly before Moses destroyed them (before he had shown them to the Hebrews)

Moses came down from the mountain with the tablets...and...

quote:

And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount

Exodus 32:19

so presumably the Hebrews (and the rest of us) are expected to obey instructions we have never seen, its not even as if teh replacement set ("which are the same as the first" - God) are much help because they arent the same as the first apparently!

Evidence of historical figures can be shaky but we can at least decide whether what we believe falls into the category of say a "Platonist" or a "Christian." If you claim to be a Christian and don't believe in following His teachings as indicated in the New Testament in what sense would you qualify as a Christian?

And one of the things he said was to follow what we commonly call the ten commandments. In fact, it appears to very much at the core of what Christians need to do to qualify as Christians.

Sorry that is not what I mean by "Humpty Dumpty theology"

should have googled it to ensure the phrase has no other meaning.

Its a quote from Alice in Wonderland

When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.”

Funny, I thought either Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum, or the White Knight said that quote. But I probably got confused by some movie or cartoon variant. Gary Cooper played the White Knight in one movie adaptation.
