I had problems in the US. I refused to act like I was a member of an underclass and it clearly annoyed lots of whites.

Our kids (or the two who can't pass as whites) also has problems.

We moved away.

Re: The innovators:

Black people are no more in chains in this society than women are. That's pretty obvious.

Also, on the liberal side of the political spectrum there's a lot of concern about things like racism and a lot of talk about it. Not so much about sexism which makes the sexual harassment of women not a surprise on both sides of that political spectrum.

It's also true that women can be routinely called names and insulted by both black and white men with no consequences while using similar terms to refer to black men, Asian people or any other minority is strictly forbidden. What this society seems to be largely blind to is the level of sexism, not racism.

I don't doubt your account. I just don't like hearing it and would have liked for you to have stayed in this country. I would be willing to bet that the folks in my part of the country would not have treated you poorly. I know I wouldn't have.

BTW, my grandfather used to raise sheep on his farm. My mom was not that big of a fan of them as she considered sheep to be a little on the dumb side.

Philer, I had problems in Massachusetts although not as bad as I did in NC.
I'm not saying all Americans behaved badly, just that more than I was prepared to accept.
Here I get the occasional, usually phrased as humourous, insult but basically NZers are tolerant.
My daughter, the fair skinned one, tells me that in Auckland there is rather a lot of abuse hurled at Asians, mainly because locals feel that they are being swamped by them.
