Using science to defend racism dates back to the Founding Fathers:

The use of dubious science to defend racism is as old as the Founding Fathers

I've always thought they used it as an excuse to keep slaves. Whether it be by Africans physical looks or so called lack of intelligence, they saw what they could do, ability to work in fields, be a blacksmith, build/make furniture, musicians, cook/clean and have families they cared for and do all the necessaries whites could do.

People don't need science or the Founding Fathers to be racist.

People are racist because they want to be. People are racist because they choose to focus on differences in people rather than similarities.

People are racist because they are human. They identify with their own race more than other races. There's nothing inherently sinister about that.

It only becomes a problem when combined with irrational beliefs about people of other races being bad in some way. That kind of nonsense they need to be taught.
