Canada fighting povery

Quebec plans to inject $3 billion over the next five years to fight poverty by increasing financial assistance to society’s poorest.

Individuals with a limited capacity to work are the big winners of the much-anticipated welfare reform announced on Sunday. By 2023, they will see their annual government assistance jump from $12,749 to $18,029, which will bring their income up to the poverty threshold. Quebec will pay a total of $1.2 billion to provide them with a basic income (or guaranteed minimum income), separate from rules imposed in the social assistance program.

i was thinking it was basic income for those who can't work.

for example, i have a cousin who 's a quadriplegic, his mother died last Christmas
so he is now financially on his own and relies solely on U.S. gov monthly check. He has called several of us saying that he's starving. When i found out how little he get to live on,i was appalled. Maybe he should move to Canada.

Meanwhile the heartless bear turds of the British conservative party are introducing a new system of welfare which is driving people into homelessness.

Between applying and being approved there is a 6 week layover period during which you get no money if you are in private rental how are you supposed to pay the rent? How is any one supposed to feed themselves? This 6 weeks is the minimum it is often longer and people are losing their houses as a result.

Worse still if you are one of the working poor your income is calculated by the calendar month, December has two paydays (if you are paid weekly)which means that you will drop off the register for payment meaning that you have to apply again and wait six weeks for payment - except it wont be 6 weeks because the offices are closed over the Christmas/New Year period - so you have to wait a week before you can even apply!

i think they copied the 6 weeks from the U.S
That is our wait for unemployment.

they do that, so that people will get a job right away.

Not only is that true but in the US since Newt Gingrich's plan there are persons in certain states that collect less than $200 a month cash. In OR. it is $506 for a family of three and what was promised, job programs where employers would get a large tax break but they didn't sign up, so it was discontinued, an open door for fraud. Who can live on $506 a month, you are either in your parents basement, couch surfing, on the street or not reporting other income.

I certainly hope Canada’s fight with poverty turns out better than America’s “War on Poverty” initiated by Lyndon Johnson back in the 1960s.

Very doubtful Hawk, there is a limit of funding that will shut the tap earlier than later. Or the Liberals will see themselves as the destruction of a nation to debt load.

Liberals will not be voting for the Trump tax bill that will add 1.5 trillion to the national debt to give huge tax breaks to the rich.
