California sues over Corinthian students' unresolved debt relief claims

SACRAMENTO – California Attorney General Xavier Becerra today filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education and its Secretary, Betsy DeVos, for refusing to process debt relief claims submitted by tens of thousands of students who took out federal student loans to attend Corinthian Colleges, Inc. (Corinthian). Students became eligible to apply for this relief after the courts found that Corinthian defrauded these students in violation of California consumer protection laws. More than 1 in 4 of those students with pending debt relief claims resided in California.

“What Secretary DeVos is doing is unconscionable,” said Attorney General Becerra. “After having their American Dreams stolen by a so-called higher education institution, Corinthian students are now being denied critical relief by a Secretary of Education hostile to their plight. It is hard to believe that we are forced to sue the Department of Education to compel Secretary DeVos to carry out the Department's legal duty and help these students rebuild their lives. We will work to ensure that all who seek a college degree can do so without worrying about unscrupulous for-profit purveyors of a sham college education.”

I can understand if the situation was one in which the students received an education, but in this case, this chain of schools was defrauding the students.

This is from an article last year:

The Santa Ana, [sign in to see URL] company advertised programs and degrees that it didn’t actually offer and practiced unlawful debt collection methods, like barring students who were behind on their loan payments from attending class.

And while over $800 of the billion-plus settlement is supposed to go to students, it is unlikely that they’ll receive even a penny—Corinthian filed for bankruptcy in May and is heavily in debt. Luckily, today’s announcement from the Department of Education will give the students some relief. ](source)

I don't know how these for-profit schools were ever able to exist! Now Betsy DeVos wants to take away their relief from the burden of being scammed? If these students were being helped out of this situation, maybe they could afford to go to a real school. And Betsy is a "education secretary."

I've done some research on those schools on tv you see for 9 months or so. They have been under suspect for awhile they can be 15-25k for those months and many students quit and keep the money as well.

I went through university from winning paid scholarships. Never had to borrow a penny.
