Long-Term Warming Trend Continued in 2017: NASA, NOAA

Earth’s global surface temperatures in 2017 ranked as the second warmest since 1880, according to an analysis by NASA.

Continuing the planet's long-term warming trend, globally averaged temperatures in 2017 were 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.90 degrees Celsius) warmer than the 1951 to 1980 mean, according to scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York. That is second only to global temperatures in 2016.

In a separate, independent analysis, scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) concluded that 2017 was the third-warmest year in their record. The minor difference in rankings is due to the different methods used by the two agencies to analyze global temperatures, although over the long-term the agencies’ records remain in strong agreement. Both analyses show that the five warmest years on record all have taken place since 2010.

Because weather station locations and measurement practices change over time, there are uncertainties in the interpretation of specific year-to-year global mean temperature differences. Taking this into account, NASA estimates that 2017’s global mean change is accurate to within 0.1 degree Fahrenheit, with a 95 percent certainty level.

“Despite colder than average temperatures in any one part of the world, temperatures over the planet as a whole continue the rapid warming trend we’ve seen over the last 40 years,” said GISS Director Gavin Schmidt.

The planet’s average surface temperature has risen about 2 degrees Fahrenheit (a little more than 1 degree Celsius) during the last century or so, a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere. Last year was the third consecutive year in which global temperatures were more than 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) above late nineteenth-century levels.

Thanks for posting that ... I saw something about it on another site as well, but haven't had time yet to look at it.

A graph I saw yesterday on an article showed a comparison between El Nino patterns versus 1998 and 2016 ...

Article

Prof Stefan Rahmstorf said there had been a very significant increase in global temperature since the major El Niño seen in 1998: “In just 18 years, our greenhouse gas emissions have pushed up global temperature by a full 0.4C. At this rate the Paris goal of 1.5C will already be crossed in under two decades.”

From what I heard yesterday even if we stopped our excess CO2 emissions tomorrow we would still break the 2F goal due to the lag between cause and effect

Yes, i fully understand the difference between weather and climate. And i do accept the concepT of global climate change. However, it is a bit unusual that here in the Driftless Area (where Iowa,Wisconsin, and Minnesota come together) we have just endured a solid month of sub-zero temperatures. As well as suffering through three bitterly cold winters over the past four years. And quite frankly the past few summers have also been rather mild. None of which alters my belief in climate change. But it does make one shake his head in bewilderment.

Careful Hawk, they will be on you as me in being a "Denier", and I know how troubling that could be!!

I too live Midwestern. We have enjoyed four really mild summers here as well with severe cold in winter, hardly ANY form of extreme 'Change' from decades past. NY and NC residents may also feel less likely to agree with CC enthusiasts.

For the last time, you cannot step outside, check your weather, and come to a conclusion about Global Warming.

If that were true, I could say how we're expecting a high of 50F on Monday.

That may be due to Global Warming, but it is not significant proof for it.

Hawk, Google "current weather trends in Alaska and all of the Arctic: 'News"
especially

http://theconversation.com/is-warming-in-the-arctic-behind-this-years-crazy-winter-weather-89740

Long story short, the freezing cold is caused by the jet stream being far to the South. which might be a function of the Ice Cap, shrinking.

On the East Coast the cold snap(s)end, then there is a couple if days of above average winter temperatures that melt the snow and ice, causing flooding.

This is caused by the jet stream trying to move to the North were it belongs, but that sucks in hot El Nino, and quite hot Western States, high pressure systems, which on their back side pull (suck) the cold Arctic air, so the jet stream, back down to the South again.

Read up on the Google search and decide for yourself, Professor.

And sincerely, my long story short is my own thinking based on watching weather systems as mariner, so if you find flaws in it, please, correct them as you would were I am a student (which we all always are, really).

For example how the the nice dry weather in San Francisco might not be a good thing ?
