Give troubled people cash and they might buy booze of drugs instead.

Free, free, free..... Good Gawd Rigs, did you flunk Freshman Macro or what? None of that is free. Everything has a cost. If the recipient isn't paying, you can be assured that you and I are paying.

Its an investment.
When you provide good social services and create positive communities, you save money on waste like police, criminal justice, prisons, crime, divorce, drugs use, suicide, etc.
When you have healthy people with secure homes, they will be far more productive and beneficial to society as a whole. You just have to help provide the means for them to be able to, such as education and training.

Both right. It works in the Nordic countries you pay dearly in taxes but then you have high end services. To many oppose that here, they like doing what they want with their money and the word "tax" here is a dirty word with the poor and being on welfare, there many of those high quality services are for everyone.

Everything seems to come down to "taxes". How much you have to pay and what the government does with it. Personally I would be happy to pay more taxes if the money went to help Americans instead of building aircraft that don't work, warship that breakdown, and nuclear weapons and their delivery systems that hopefully will never be used. How many poor children could you feed and educate on the tax money wasted by the Pentagon?

At least in Canada we know part of our tax money will go into health care, child care, pension plans and other benefits to help every one.

Or as Bill Hicks said

quote:

Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.”

We have that in the US, too. In fact, just at the federal level, about $3+ Trillion per year goes to those things.

I don't think so.
I think the whole federal budget is $3.7 trillion, and that is if you count Social Security, which is funded independently so should not really be part of the budget at all. The Military is where over half of the discretionary money is spent. And it is even worse than this graph shows, because much of the social services wedge is really for VA, GI Bill, etc., that is also from the miltiary.
