What is killing liberalism?
What is killing liberalism?
The death of liberalism constitutes the publishing world’s biggest mass funeral since the death of God half a century ago. Some authors, like conservative philosopher Patrick Deneen, of Why Liberalism Failed, have come to bury yesterday’s dogma. Others, like Edward Luce (The Retreat of Western Liberalism), Mark Lilla (The Once and Future Liberal), and Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt (How Democracies Die) come rather to praise. I’m in the latter group; the title-in-my-head of the book I’m now writing is What Was Liberalism.
But perhaps, like God, liberalism has been buried prematurely. Maybe the question that we should be asking is not what killed liberalism, but rather, what can we learn from liberalism’s long story of persistence—

Re: What is killing liberalism?
Liberalisam hasn't died. It's alive and well. Take a poll on just about any major issue and the liberal side will win by a lot. The problem is that the word has been demonized by conservatives and fo way too long the liberals never fought back. Liberals need to brag about being liberals, they need to be proud of it. And not just those of us on message boards that nobody's ever heard of, the Democrats need to do it too. When was the last time you heard the word "liberal" when a Democrat was endorsing a candidate, or introducing them at a rally. Republicans tout their conservatism all the time but the Democrats it sometimes seems their ashamed of being liberals. That's just the first part, they also need to demonize conservatism, make it a dirty word. Conservatives have already done that with liberalism so much that all they have to do is say "He's a liberal" and it's understood that that's a negative. He doesn't have to say anymore. It should be easy for us too, way easier than it was for the Republicans. They don't run on their ideas or their values, Republicans don't. They don't run on tax cuts for the rich or taking health care away from people or allowing companies to sell you private information or repealing net neutrality so that don't be surprised if you have to pay more Facebook and Twitter. They don't run on any of that. They run on the scare tactic of hey my opponent is a liberal, and they don't have to go any further because they've already demonized the word.

Re: What is killing liberalism?
One thing that damages liberalism is the incessant torrent of lies told to the public by the MSM, mouthpieces for the deep state/M.I.C.
The fact that notable liberals don't put forward any counter to the lies is a strong reason for the belief of these lies.

Re: What is killing liberalism?
Remember when George H.W. Bush ran for president in 1988 calling liberalism "the L word"? Anyone who thinks liberalism is dead may not have noticed the massive protests against Trump's inauguration, or the kids storming the statehouse in Florida the other day, singing "We Shall Overcome."

Re: What is killing liberalism?
If you consider the classical definition of liberalism, the US spectrum, "liberals", "conservatives" and "libertarian" all espouse liberalism. So liberalism is certainly not dead, for if it dies, the US as we know it will be dead. The use of the labels liberal and conservative within the US are parochial and misleading.

Re: What is killing liberalism?
I agree, Gopquy, but those are the labels we have for what George Lakoff calls the nurturing mother and the strict father political philosophies. (Guess which means liberalism and which means conservatism?)

Re: What is killing liberalism?
It isn't liberalism that's in question, it's logic and reason.
The problem is that everything gets labeled conservative or liberal and that's how so many decide the issue.
For example, global warming - accepting the fact that it is happening and that we should take action - is not a liberal or conservative issue. Exactly what we do to deal with it may be, but we are at a point where so many see no reason to act on it at all.
I think that conservatives of decades past would have acted.
Today, they are basically saying that they do not care that 90% of scientists tell us we should act, scientists are wrong. That's a loss of logic and reason.

Re: What is killing liberalism?
The figure was 97% quite recently but that is too low.
I agree that the label "liberalism" is open to being a brand for things it is not.
The big problem for the rest of the world is that in America both main parties are bought and paid for by the M.I.C. so you are always at war with some country or another.
