Re: God, Hawking and the Universe:

quote:

If 'God' exists it will exist no matter who believes or disbelieves in it

1.God refuses to prove that (S)He exists because proof denies faith and without faith God is nothing.

2.Man then counters that the Babel fish is a dead giveaway because it could not have evolved by chance. So the fish proves that God exists - but hence also, by God's own reasoning (see 1) that God does not exist.

3.God says that (S)He hadn't thought of that (hadn't thought of 2) and promptly disappears in a puff of logic.

I don't worry about it at all. It's interesting to me that unbelievers want to talk about it all the time. They spend tremendous thought and energy denouncing something they don't believe in.

For myself I think it very important to understand what it is I dont believe in.

Consequently have have read the Bible and religious textbooks at least as much as many Christians - many of who seem to have little understanding of what it is that they have 'signed up to'

I think its imperative to know what you believe in and on the other hand what you don't believe in. Science has replaced theology not necessarily because its better but because it needs proof before it is declared as true. Religion has never shown one iota of proof. Thus the word "faith" is used as proof. How convenient. emoticon

Unfortunately a lot of folks think their own personal opinions/biases are equal to proof!

It depends on what you accept as proof. It's your own personal opinion that scientific proof is superior to divine truth, and it's your own personal opinion that the two contradict each other. To make it more complicated, there is disagreement about scientific truth (science has never yet claimed to find the "final" answer), and the different religions tell you how much disagreement there is about divine truth.

I personally think the laws of science, flawed as our knowledge of them is, are superior to the laws of God as interpreted by men. But I think it is really misguided to sneer at religion.

To question is not to 'sneer, Belle. Indeed science is built on questioning and the inclination to doubt that there can be 'a final answer' to anything. Learning is ongoing.

Every legitimate study I've read says that on the average atheists and agnostics know more about religion than the majority of religious people.

Can you seriously read this thread, Cro, and claim that the anti-religion remarks here are "questioning"?

I don't know which legitimate studies you have read, Shifty. Can you give us some links?

Certainly not, Belle! I was referring to science, scientists, and those of us who truly revere and understand the scientific method. An open mind is a prerequisite! As I said before, the only thing I have against the religious-minded is a tendency of some of them to try to force their religious beliefs on others. The same goes for others who are prone to the same behavior whether they are theists or not!
