I guess I needed to use some kind of smiley when I said it's proof that video games cause violence.

😋

Even if you had I would have commented about that notion. I'm not convinced that video games don't have an influence on behaviour. TV and movies certainly have.

But I don't believe a game which simulates playing football would promote or generate violence. Ones which portray people shooting people are another matter.

I disagree since TV and movies first came to view there has been violence portrayed which often is a reflection of real life and viewed by many billions who don't commit horrendous violent crimes. Do those persons who have a propensity towards violence are they encouraged by what they see, more than likely, so the question is how much do you want to crimp first amendment rights for those that are ill?

These games don't make people violent but they attract violent people.

The fact that most people don't become violent after seeing violence depicted in some form of media doesn't mean that it doesn't influence some people to become violent who wouldn't have otherwise. We have a whole industry built on the idea that what people see on TV and in films can lead them to do things. It's called the advertising business. And while most people may not go out and buy something after seeing an ad, it's a safe bet some people will.

Seeing depictions of violence which make it look like good fun and games can lead some people to actually become violent. There are also other ways in which those depictions can promote violence. One is what I call the John Wayne syndrome. Making unjustified violence look like something a good guy would turn to if he has been insulted or disrespected.

I have no problem with reasonable censorship of depictions of violence in video games, TV shows and films. But I disagree that it is only the "ill" that we need to be concerned about.

If they only attracted violent people we wouldn't need to be concerned about them. They would simply be a way for those violent people to act out their violence without actually becoming violent.

The reality is more complicated than that. Depictions of violence can contain all sorts of messages about violence being justified when it is not as well as make that violence look like a lot of fun. It can also give stupid people ideas about what would be a neat form of violence to commit.

Your first paragraph doesn't make sense to me. The second "stupid people" is a simplistic easy answer and dismissive.

Irrational is a better term than stupid. What I mean by that term stupid people are people who would see some depiction of irrational violence in a film and not only want to imitate it but be willing to do so.

That sort of thing has happened. For example, people have seen depictions of people being set on fire in a film and then have done the same thing in real life soon after viewing the film.

Neither stupid or irrational is what you would call a normal person. If you watch a movie and set someone on fire because of that movie you are not normal. Normal persons do not commit such acts.
