The Trump Supporter's Official Theme Song

quote:

If I Only Had a Brain

The Flaming Lips

I could while away the hours
Conferrin' with the flowers,
Consulting with the rain;
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts are busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

I'd unravel ev'ry riddle for ev'ry
Individdle
In trouble or in pain
With the thoughts that you'll be thinkin'
You could be another Lincoln
If I only had a brain.

Oh, I, could tell you why
The oceans near the shore
I could think of things I'd never
Thunk before,
And then I'd sit down and think some more.

I would not be just a muffin',
My head all full of stuffin',
My heart all full of pain;
And perhaps I'd deserve you and be
Even worthy even you
If I only had a brain.

What an appropriate lament!

One thing to remember about the scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz is that he actually had a brain. He just didn't know it and wasn't all that good at using it.

Trump supporters have brains. Using them well is where they occasionally have a problem.

The original song written by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg(lyrics) is one of my favorite tunes to play and listen to. I love this jazz version of the song performed by the Four Freshmen.

BTW, here's a little background information on Yip Harburg, the lyricist for "If I Only Had a Brain" from Wikipedia. It's unlikely he would have been a Trump supporter.

quote:

Edgar Yipsel "Yip" Harburg (born Isidore Hochberg, Yiddish: איסידור הוכברג‎; April 8, 1896 or 1898 – March 5, 1981) was an American popular song lyricist and librettist who worked with many well-known composers. He wrote the lyrics to the standards "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" (with Jay Gorney), "April in Paris", and "It's Only a Paper Moon", as well as all of the songs in The Wizard of Oz, including "Over the Rainbow". He was known for the social commentary of his lyrics, as well as his liberal sensibilities. He championed racial and gender equality and union politics. He also was an ardent critic of religion.

Actually he didn't have a brain...his head was stuffed with straw. He just thought he was stupid because he didn't have a "brain". Actually he was very intelligent. The Tin Man didn't have a heart but he was very kind and thoughtful of others. The Cowardly Lion thought he was a coward because he felt fear but he never let his fear master him when his friends were in danger. These character's misunderstanding of their own true natures was Baum's whole point. "If I Only Had a Brain" demonstrates this.

Too many people mistake the shadow for the substance. This is especially true of Trump's supporter!

In the classic film, "The Wizard of Oz" it turns out he had a brain and realizes it after the "Wizard" presents him with a diploma.

I think it was part of his point but not his whole point. I think part of what he was trying to say is that you don't need to turn to a "wizard" for what you already possess.

Another way of putting it is that they believe what only appears to be true on the surface, not what is actually true.

I absolutely love "The Wizard of Oz" and its messages. There is more points made in that movie than any other. What you "posess" is know your self and have esteem to evil will be defeated.

I was referring to L. Frank Baum's original story The Wonderful Wizard of OZ (in book form) which I became acquainted with as a toddler. My grandmother read it to me frequently (at my insistence). Since she put her finger under each word as she read it it helped me start reading earlier that I might otherwise have done. The Scarecrow DID NOT have a brain until the Wizard gave him a mixture made of bran mixed with pins and needles. The bran because they they were brand new brainsand the pins and needles to make him "sharp".

I didn't see the movie until I was around 10. I was outraged, horrified, and aghast at the liberties the movie makers had taken with the story! Dorothy's slippers were silver not ruby, there were no farm hands, Miss Gulch, or Prof. Marvel. Also the Good Witch of the North was the one who started Dorothy on her journey (we find out that her name was Tattypoo in a later book). Glinda was the Good Witch of the South and she doesn't appear until the end of the book. The Wicked Witch (of the West) didn't show up until latter either. There was no claim that it was all a dream at the end either!

I eventually got over my shock and became fond of the movie mainly because of the songs, Bert Lahr's Cowardly Lion, Frank Morgan's Wizard, and Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch!

I used to get an OZ book every Christmas (the Baum books were recycled from my uncle's childhood collection) and I eventually evolved into the stories of Ruth Plumly Thompson. I used to read them when I was sick because they always made me feel better and I still do. I still have them both in hard copy and on Kindle. I KNOW FROM OZ!!!

That's an understandable reaction but at least the film based on the book was a very good one. And they didn't make fun of the original story.

My reaction to the only Doc Savage film ever made was extreme anger that they would take such a great pulp fiction character and make fun of him and the story, as well as other characters in the book. I suppose the film makers thought they were being smart and clever to try to turn a Doc Savage novel into a farce but all they did was demonstrate their stupidity. And the resultant film tanked at the box office.

I also hated the film "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" because it was greatly inferior to the novel, which was a lot of fun to read. The author Ken Kesey claimed to have never seen the film. He didn't miss much.

The film is truly a classic. A brilliant collaboration of artists to turn out a final product that was as great as their individual talents. It is full of iconic images and film dialogue like Dorothy's "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."

One of the messages of the film may be a little more profound or subversive than what some people realize. "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" may be a dig at religion or at least at phony religious leaders. Certainly the film seems to be telling people to rely on themselves rather than to seek what you need from others.
