Another tempest in a teapot

quote:

NBC host Megyn Kelly apologized to colleagues on Tuesday after her comments defending racist Halloween gags prompted an immediate backlash.
"One of the wonderful things about my job is that I get the chance to express and hear a lot of opinions," Kelly said in the internal note, a copy of which was provided by a spokesperson for NBC. "Today is one of those days where listening carefully to other points of view, including from friends and colleagues, is leading me to rethink my own views."
Kelly made the offending remarks during an awkward roundtable discussion about inappropriate and offensive costumes on her eponymous one-hour block of the "Today" show, known as "Megyn Kelly Today."
During the segment on Tuesday, Kelly said it was OK when she was growing up for white people to dress up as black characters, and she spoke out against a controversy that erupted last year over a reality star who portrayed Diana Ross.

"But what is racist?" Kelly asked. "Because you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid that was OK, as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character."

Shocking! Perhaps someone should have called out the FBI to investigate Megyn for those remarks.

quote:

Many observers were aghast at Kelly's comments, and some noted that the panel did not include a single person of color. And absent from the discussion was any mention of the ugly history of blackface, a tradition spanning centuries meant to perpetuate racist stereotypes.

The panel was full of people of color. Just not people of the particular color that some people would have preferred to see.

quote:

"But on Halloween? On Halloween you've got guys running around with fake axes coming out of their head," Kelly replied. "You're going to, it's going to be jarring."

Yes, but even on Halloween some things are politically incorrect. Not evil characters like the serial killer from the film Halloween but other characters whom white people must never imitate. A white kid imitating a black celebrity? That would be truly horrifying and disgusting.

"Halloween" is a movie, not talking on blackface to play Othello but to portray the stereotypical of mocking African-American as stupid, less than human, lazy, shuffle on down fetch and step for the white boss and the 'shows' heavily promoted segregation with music and songs, the most famous "Jump Jim Crow." It is extremely racist as seen by black people even if Caucasians don't, which should be a good enough reason anyway.

White people should not be imitating certain white people either, Hitler is a good start. Evil serial killers, have never watched one of those movies but to this day the "Headless Horseman" scares me to death. we had a lake by my house and I came home far to late from exploring at about 15, it is also where we road horses, It was autumn, dark, I was alone on the footpath with the trees rustling in the wind and I've never been so scared in my life and obviously so as I still think about it and get the creeps.

Yes, Halloween is a movie, a crappy movie which probably promotes violence on the part of nitwits who want to imitate the brainless character who is the "awesome" stalker and killer in the film. The film probably should have been banned.

White kids and even adults dressing up like their favorite black person on Halloween is not inherently racist. And Megyn Kelly was not defending blackface minstrel shows. It's another case of trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

On Halloween night watch the film "Sleepy Hollow" along with "Nightmare On Elm Street" and "Jeepers Creepers." If you make it through those three films that should permanently cure you of your fears, katie. emoticon

What's 'making a mountain of a molehill' or ' tempest in a teapot'?

They are anything Philer doesn't attach much importance to as opposed to such things which a/he does such as private planes or compelling women to carry guns (whether they want to or not) It must be nice to be the arbiter of all things, eh Philer!

Based on what you've said you would not enjoy any of those three films. They are not exactly lightweight horror films, especially "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Jeepers Creepers."

Did you ever see the Vincent Price film, "House of Wax?" It's from the early fifties and is one of his more scary films. Another very scary Price film of the fifties is "Return of the Fly," one of my favorites.

I don't want to compel women to carry guns or any kind of weapon but I do want them to realize that carrying weapons is something that is taken seriously by the police for a good reason. And that there is no good reason for them not to do the same thing. They are just as competent to carry weapons as the police are and need them just as much as the police do if not more.

What about your desire to outlaw small private planes, Philer? Large commercial planes have been known to crash in populated areas, too, but you don't seem to find that worrying.
