Discussions more like that take place in Sunday School, not church services. In church services one view is presented, that of the pastor. Even in Sunday School the talk is mostly about what Bible passages mean rather than any moral discussion.

I used to watch a BBC show called "Vicar of Dibley", and I would not have mined that sort of religion at all.

Yes, that is a pretty good show.

The murder of George Floyd reminds us that just disarming the police is not enough. They can still kill. We likely should just disband them completely.

We'd still need police detectives and probably at least some patrol officers. I partly blame poor training for what happened. Those cops didn't listen to the victim when he was complaining about not being able to breathe. Their training needs to emphasize listening to someone when they are being physically restrained. Cops also need to be taught to have a little more respect for those they go after. And of course we need to get rid of the drug war. That could easily prevent a lot of abuse by the police.

The most important thing is to take away what amounts to their license to kill. When they kill someone they need to be held accountable and go to prison if it wasn't actually in self-defense. Just being worried that someone is armed or will escape isn't sufficient and can't justify what is essentially murder.

I can't argue with any of that.
Untrained volunteers would not know how to investigate.
Someone still has to give speeding tickets.
This cop was likely trained to used illegal choke holds.
Currently cops are illegally immune to citizens arrest.

By the way, here is the video showing George Floyd cooperating and not resisting.

Possibly. Certainly his training appears to have been grossly inadequate. Using such prolonged restrictive methods are apparently not allowed in St. Louis and cops aren't trained to use them. I can't recall any similar incidents there. Unfortunately there have been some questionable police shootings in the St. Louis area including that infamous shooting in Ferguson.

I still wish that some onlookers had rushed to the man's aid and pulled the cop off him. Of course it would have been highly risky to do so.

Yes, I would have tried to help him.
I likely would have been arrested or killed as well.

I would have and it wouldn't have been my first time. Cops are supposed to be "peacekeepers" were they ever? They need to change their entire system who they are, I was held up by a motorcycle cop in a grocery store parking lot a few years ago for an expired registration of 3 days, you'd think I'd committed murder and I was there for 45 min. They need better vetting, I have met cops other times where they are vested in the community instead of trying on the bad ass crap.

It certainly would have been difficult to help George because the rogue cop had other cops protecting his prolonged assault on him.

They need to be taught and trained to respect the people they encounter even when they are guilty of crimes. It would be understandable if they were less than kind when the criminal they are dealing with has committed a terrible crime but they have a tendency to treat all criminals as if they are equally bad. And sometimes they treat the violent ones better than petty criminals, especially if they happen to be abusive spouses who have attacked their wives.

I'm not surprised you were treated badly by a cop over a minor matter. As I've mentioned before, for some reason cops like to pick on women. Being misogynistic probably has something to do with it.
