Yes, in general people have a great ability to adjust to new situations. In the case of prisons how easily one adjusts depends a lot on the prisons but they aren't as bad as they once were.
No rational person would want to be in prison but after awhile prison life can be well tolerated by most criminals and preferable to capital punishment.
And there are other reasons why capital punishment makes sense in the case of murderers. Why should a murderer get to see his relatives and talk with them when the victim's relatives can't visit with them?
There are good reasons why many Chinese people were upset about the murderer of Yingying Zhang not receiving the death penalty. To spare such cretins from capital punishment is not really being fair to the victim's family. Her family didn't even have a body to take back to China.
