Trump's tax increase.

Trump's Suggested Import Tax Would Mean Americans Pay For That Wall

It is a tax increase.
A 20% border tax on Mexican imports is paid by whom, ultimately, at the point of purchase ?
How is it making Mexico pay anything ?

Thinking anything otherwise is just deluding yourself.

I'm wondering if he will back down on this, I can't help but think with throwing out words like this is "one idea" or we are "floating" the idea around and Priebus, "a buffet of options" now does that mean he is possibly waiting for approval, he certainly doesn't seem to be getting it from economists whether conservative or liberal, almost all say it will be sticking it to Americans in taxes, American companies and American workers.

I think that the theory is that you would stop buying Mexican and buy American instead - so in BSL's eyes its a win win he gets to stick it to Mexico and US producers get a sales boost.

Although I have to wonder why Americans arent buying American already - is it inferior or more expensive?

It would certainly be passed on to the consumer.

It's part of the NAFTA trade deal, we have long traded with Mexico before NAFTA, it's no different than getting goods from France, other EU countries the US or any other continent the UK buys from. Besides you cannot imitate Agave tequila. emoticon

Absolutely - these costs will be passed on to the US consumer (who really can't afford them). If anything US unemployment will go up - after all, while a relatively few jobs will be created by this the increase in costs will decrease demand (across the board) so employment will fall so fewer people can afford any products (made in America or elsewhere) so demand will fall, etc ...

I started another thread that looks at this from a slightly different angle

... NEVER mind a fine point that should be made about what you'll bring to to nieghbors Cinco de Mayo party ...
... but the "American stuff" is pretty scarce, so mighty dear...
In fact, aren't all the trucks with over two liter engines, now, made there, but not here ?

This the hidden Trump tax, because how is making working Americans pay more for everything be making so it great for them, right now ?

What does it matter if your money goes to big g'mint or big corporate's windfall profits ?

There's a reason that stuff is made in Mexico. It's cheaper to do so - move the production to the US and the goods will cost more. But it won't generate as many jobs as his supporters think it will. Simple fact is, those jobs aren't coming back for the simple reason that most of them don't exist anymore. Automation has replaced those jobs and the relatively few jobs that will be generated are sufficiently high tech that they won't be accessible to most of the guys that used to work in the old plant.

But there is an additional effect - if the goods are more expensive fewer people will be able to afford them so there will be less demand so the "new" factories will need even fewer people - means fewer people with jobs and less demand which means ....

Moreover Trump and the Trumpettes seem to be working under the premise that they can act in a vacuum - impose tariffs and the other side won't react - dream on. They'll start imposing tariffs of their own - so much for US exports and the associated jobs.

So the consumer SEES a higher price for foreign material goods, SEES a lower USA made price, becomes a bargain bought condition where the USA made sells and the Foreign made sits in warehouse stopping import of any more due to overstock. Money stops crossing the border.

As to "the Wall" it is forecast to cost every US taxpayer $120 to pay for the wall, not that expensive especially if it stops cheap crappy imports from flooding the market with a imposed tariff to repay that cost.

and how much more to man it and maintain it?

it wont stop 'cheap crappy imports' either - just 'cheap crappy people'
(people with lots of problems, rapists murderers, drug dealers and yes I assume good people)
