Re: Are Americans finally ready to talk about reparations?

Katie...i, also, thought about the Native Americans... They're certainly not hollering all the time about reparations. It makes me incredibly sad to think of how they were treated. Some of my/our forefathers should be burning in hell. emoticon

I find it hard to have an opinion on issues like this, I don't walk in their shoes, I have heard both Native Americans and African Americans say no and others are an adamant yes. If so I think the debts should be shared by the English, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese and French. emoticon

what about the Irish?

“James II sold 30,000 Irish prisoners as slaves to the New World. His Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies.” -
source all over the internet (possibly originating from the book "white cargo")

I was thinking you could go round the world for centuries for reparation from somebody, any of us could be eligible in one way or another.

Exactly Katie, where does it stop? The American Indian tribes generally don't care, they have as they want and live on the ground they wish to remain on, anyone can move as they are not prisoners.

Cousin from AK had a Aleut Eskimo husband. He was a defined lush, whiskey as much as could stand day in day out. Tribe got royalties from Alyeska Pipeline and the oil fields. His payday without working was close to $2000/month, threw most of it away on booze. Cousin divorced him years ago.

I have read there are Native Americans very much against it. The reparation was decades after the fact not hundreds of years, I think that is a problem to claim anything from centuries ago. My guess is if I was African American I would much rather have that money go to education and programs for black children.

Unfortunately any reparations plan will be extremely divisive. Coming at a time when we need unity more than ever. In addition my, a major question remains. What wil reparations look like. Will it be some Maas cash payment to all descendants of slaves. Or will it be some form of educational grants to all eligible recipients? And as others have mentioned, if any group is due reparations it would be the native Americans. And I go back to the divisiveness issue. It is indeed an ugly, yet very real consideration. Maybe the time has come to bite the bullet, and endure the largely racist backlash that is certain to come. And a comparison to slavery reparations and the reparations to the Japanese Americans is flawed in the mechanics of how they were carried out. The Japanese were a much smaller number. And repayment took place within the lifetime of many of those interred. Certainly within the lifetime of their children. All of that being said, I just don't see it happening with this administration and congress.
