Have to love modern medicine

As you all are aware I had cervical spine surgery last Wednesday. They replaced (Arthroplasty) two disc assemblies at C5/6, C6/7. I awakened from anesthesia with the typical grogginess and discomfort of being hacked on but was fairly moderate. Once rolled to my room the staff began the normal routine of asking if I needed pain meds or had any needs. Within an hour the physician had wandered by and rechecked that all was doing well then on my own with floor staff.

I NEVER needed pain meds, the incision was sore, the muscles around my shoulders sore but no worse than a decent day stringing fence or swinging large tools on a piece of off road construction equipment. Sleep was off and on but tolerable while the sore throat from having my larynx and other internals mashed off to one side being angry wore down ever so slowly.

Today is day 3 of recovery, I am walking over a mile a set every day some times twice per day, I have rules to not hyper rotate my head too far to the up view as I could potentially dislodge a insert and no lifting greater than 10 lbs. while no driving for at least two weeks same issue should an accident or strain cause a dislodge event. The sore throat is essentially gone as too the hiatal hernia effect of being back folded on the table for better access into my throat.

I have had surgeries over the decades of my life with greater pain levels than the last two I have experienced, I have never NOT needed pain meds. Modern surgeries have come a long long way.

Only if they choose to not have that access. The problem is less of access to the medical technology and more a question of whether the are sufficient practitioners in the area.

Thanks all,
The biggest caveat to this type of surgery is not just access or money but physiology. I am over 60 is the first consideration, bone density, level of arthritis advancement, osteoporosis concern as well diabetic or high A1C numbers all affect the heal ability of the spine.

I show little arthritic adaptation on the spine I do have it, I have negligible to no detectable osteoporosis, not high A1C nor type two considered with BP average 130/85 no meds and chemistry as good as it can get for a 'Old Man'. Weight is up so Doc with due concern stated to get 40 off, working at that while still working and doing my farm chores just have to leave all that hang for the next weeks to allow to heal up.

Per the reviewing physicians I have the physique of a 40 year old just the scars and miles of the use I have made of my frame. Had I had one or more negatives on this score would have been a conventional fusion surgery.

So a worker in a 'mom and pop store' with no health insurance would have access to the same level of care?

As an independent contractor, the best price I could negotiate for family health insurance was about $1200/month for much of my life.
Only after ACA could I get it down to more like $500/month, which is still out of reach of many poor people.

With Obamacare, they can purchase insurance, unless they decide they don't want to buy it. And they receive subsidies to help with the purchase.

As of now they would, dependent on age an income for Obamacare and if income is low enough and they are in a medicaid expansion state they are on medicaid. Those without any access and poor/low income and not in a medicaid state are still going without. Those in the age brackets of 50-64 some were also unable to afford Obamacare, they are the folks that are still uninsured. With what any of the republicans want, will leave many more millions uninsured that are now and there is no getting around that. Twenty million people are insured now that were not prior to the ACA, which according to statistics there were 48 million.
