The decline of religion in America:

The decline of religion in America:

Released Tuesday, the survey of 35,000 American adults shows the Christian percentage of the population dropping precipitously, to 70.6%. In 2007, the last time Pew conducted a similar survey, 78.4% of American adults called themselves Christian. In the meantime, almost every major branch of Christianity in the United States has lost a significant number of members, Pew found, mainly because millennials are leaving the fold. More than one-third of millennials now say they are unaffiliated with any faith, up 10 percentage points since 2007. The alacrity of their exodus surprises even seasoned experts.

It's not just millennials leaving the church. Whether married or single, rich or poor, young or old, living in the West or the Bible Belt, almost every demographic group has seen a significant drop in people who call themselves Christians, Pew found.

{The "nones" as we are called [ those who answer "none" to question about religious affiliation} are the fastest growing group of any in religious surveys. Its fair to say the belief in religion and God is in decline in the United States. Its the same in much of the western world and as you can see its not just the young but spreads through all demographic groups. This may account for much of the fear and loathing many show towards atheists. When things you hold dear are kicked aside many get angry and feel the need to strike out at someone.

Religion will always be with us but for those of us who believe religion has done more harm than good throughout history this is positive news. God and religion is still the most widely believed myth world wide for humans. The graveyards of the world are stuffed with the bodies of those who killed or died for their religion. We are as a species evolving away from this massive superstition but its a very slow process. The day however will arrive when religion and the belief in a supernatural deity will be followed only in a few dusty monasteries by fewer and fewer people. This I believe will make for a better world. A more productive and gentler world. A more peaceful planet all around. What do you think?}
